Bagless Vacuum for Sandy Porch

I’m looking for a vacuum to use on our porch. The kids have a sandpit just next to it and sand gets spread far and wide. We currently have a cheap Ozito wet/dry vacuum but if it’s used without a bag the sand just gets blown out of the collecting cylinder. The bags fill up and get heavy quickly so they’re not an ideal solution. Cordless would be a bonus but not essential. Any recommendations will be appreciated!

Thanks

Think you’ll be fighting a losing battle.. Just sweep it off

  • Strong disagree with the first comment. Outdoor vacuuming is often very effective. I'm intrigued though that the sand flies out of the cylinder on your current wet/dry vac. Do you have the filter installed? If so, maybe a cloth filter bag would work better? See below.

Otherwise, I'd try the cheapest bagless vac you can get as a starting point. I don't like them generally, but your use case is very different from regular house vacuuming. Maybe someone is giving one away on Facebook or etc.

    • I’ve been using it without the filter. I thought it would get clogged with sand but I’ll give it a go, thank you

      • Sand shouldn't clog the filter. I'd treat vacuuming sand like vacuuming water, and use the foam filter.

I have an Ozito wet / dry vac (albeit the 18v one) and use the foam filter for any outdoors vacuuming. Sand and dirt is fine. Lighter stuff like leaves eventually covers the filter, but turning it off for a few seconds means most drop down and don't get sucked up onto the filter again.

Sand getting blown out the air outlet is likely just the sand as it is first sucked in, because most of the air flows straight across and out through the fan. Once it settles to the bottom there won't be enough airflow to pick it back up and suck it out.

  • I sweep it off.
but i do have a dustbuster (like this one https://www.godfreys.com.au/b-d-pivot-dustbuster)
which is modded to use a 18v ryobi battery.

it's the old hand held vac we had before the battery died, and we bought a new one while i tinkered.
this means we have the 'proper' dustbuster for normal things and the sacrificial one, which is the frankenvac (dustbuster + 18v ryobi battery)

maybe you can find a second hand battery-broken 18v handheld vac and frankenstein it yourself?

You are meant to put the foam sock over the motor end if not using the bag.

Blower. Blow it back onto the lawn.

  • Who’s Sandy Porch?
