What's a good price range for...(fresh produce)

So I recently came back from Europe and had figs for the first time. Now that I'm back I'm looking to buy figs, but don't know what a good price would be. So it got me thinking, would it be worthwhile to have a thread where people post either their best prices / reasonable price for specific fresh produce (fruit +/- veg). I haven't really considered all factors to see whether this is meaningful.

Prices obviously fluctuate between years based on supply/demand + inflation + quality + variety but hopefully it will still give those looking to try new foods a rough idea / a reference point for the future.

Feel free to be as specific as can be bothered. The more specific, the more useful.

  • Black Plum

    • Price: $1.99/kg (best price)
      Location: Trims Fresh Merrylands, NSW
      Year: 2020

      • And what variety was that plum?

  • Raspberry

    • Price: 2 x 250g for $4
      Location: Panetta Mercato Leichhardt, NSW
      Year: 2022

    • $3.50 for 125g in SA is a good price.
      Coles/Woolies

  • Figs :)

Prices vary weekly for most fresh produce; so don't see any benefit of doing something like this. Strawberries have been between $8 - $25 per Kg just in the last 6 weeks for example.

in which case knowing the $8/kg price would be useful for someone like me.

      • +2

They are literally $8/kg at Coles and Woolworths.. not sure how it’s helpful.

        • Let's say it was grapes instead of strawberries for example, they were >$10/kg probably a month or two ago at Coles/Woolies. Would that have been a good price? When would you consider it cheap within the range of prices for grapes

Perhaps I need to reword the OP

@k15866: Grapes have many different varieties, and if you're just buying the Coles "red/green" you're missing out on a lot of flavour

This comparison thread would be like saying "prices for white, red, and sparkling wine" without even caring about the different types underneath that

            • @spackbace: Yes, that makes sense and am aware at the point you are making.

There can be as much specificity as anyone wants, knowing that when you read a response to interpret it based on the data that has been presented. Those who know enough about the specific variety of grape could also indicate the specific variety in their reply. It could stand as it's own comment thread if so desired. Alternatively group into a category like 'red grape' but have specificity in the response, so others can make a judgement call.

Maybe it ends up being chaos as ppl cant be stuffed finding the 'right' comment to reply to…dunno

        • Because if i go to iga and they're $15 per kg it'll give me a better gauge as to how reasonable the price is against competitors.

It would be helpful as a price tracker.

I usually buy fresh produce based on what's on sale, if I could see what the price of grapes (for example) has been over the past couple of months I would know if the price both Coles and Woolies are selling them for today is a good price or not.

So you want to do this for every state, multiple regions per state, etc etc…? And prices fluctuate weekly from the orchards I go to, as does current stock ie one plum variety is not the same an another

    • personally in my case I have no experience with figs so happy to take any data I can, but I understand there are many factors
the more specific people are the better but not an expectation

Also supermarkets tend to be fairly price stable for a whiles at a time but small green grocers and markets sell things at different prices over the day depending what they get delivered and how much of it they have. I once bought two full shopping bags of kiwi fruit for $2 which I froze and they made me ill when I drank some in my smoothies.

    • Imo I think state based would give a good general indication without being too area specific and therefore too in-depth.

Even as a professional ozbargainer, this is too much effort….

I'll take this as a compliment :) but like i said I don't expect the specificity.

  • I think fruit should have price caps, it isn't fair that the end consumer pays more when nothing has been done to increase the quality of the fruit to justify the price increase.

    • +2

I think ppl should be wiser shoppers and close their damn wallets. They'll charge whatever if ppl keep buying because nobody wants to wait or go without.

      • It was a joke, in response to old mate who wanted a cap on house rental prices.

Lol. That went way over my head, i thought you were serious. I didn't agree but figured each to their own and I'll add to your thoughts. P.s i didn't neg you. My begs are already capped for the day 🤣

  • Anyone know where I can reliably source rambutan in brisbane at a reasonable price? I vividly remember having them a lot when I was very young maybe 30 years ago, but I haven’t seen them in years…

  • I always get the best price for fig jam
