Drainage in The New House

Hello helpful people!

Happy New Year.

We moved to our first home recently and jut curious about the drainage system here

The front small lawn has this Round drainage: https://tinyurl.com/y6pmvypt

We have 2 tiny Courtyards with 1 not having any drainage point but some landscape

the other courtyard is all concrete but has 2 drainage.

Coming to the Backyard there is no Drainage.

So my concerns are why No drainage at the Backyard and one of the Courtyard? Is it due to the Landscape part able to take in all the water?

Whats the purpose of having this drainage in the middle of front yard?

Why 2 points in one of the courtyards? One Circle the other rectangle.

  • So,
The plans where there's no drainage in the second courtyard would probably require the permeable area (which is currently covered in relatively impermeable fake grass) to be the drainage runoff point.

The front yard drainage may be an artifact of the previous planned landscaping there - did they want to use pavers initially?, with astroturf i'd imagine a lot of the water would just shed onto the road due to the lack of permeability.
It's not like the front yard is all sloped towards the drain point

*EDIT: Shedding water onto the street is also illegal in most councils though as the water is meant to be contained and treated (infiltrated) on site so definitely look at the legalities of having artificial turf in that area. If it were me i'd rip out the turf asap and put down proper roll on grass, its cooler, looks better in the long run and infiltrates far better.

Artificial turf belongs in the bin.

    • i am not sure but i do agree with front yard point.

sorry did not get this one "The plans where there's no drainage in the second courtyard would probably require the permeable area (which is currently covered in relatively impermeable fake grass) to be the drainage runoff point" ??

  • If you can get your hands on the hydraulics report / storm water diagrams for your building (possibly in your contract of sale), this will help clear it up.

There are a few factors that will dictate whether your landscaping can absorb the water. If your backyard has a gradient, that may help, but equally if you are collecting water from your neighbours or others, this can materially affect you.

After seeing the rain in the last 12 months, I'm skeptical of any areas without sufficient drainage.

EDIT: What drakesy said is a far better take of the situation - the gradient toward the street will help a lot.

    • backyard has gradient floor. looks absorbing but how much is my concern.

    • i am afraid to let the tap open loose in there

  • Is your lawn plastic?
They probably put it so in heavy rain the fake turf and its underlay doesn’t wash away.

    • yes all plastic. you mean front one to hold that fake grass?

  • Good lord, is 100% of your grass fake?

Also lol at that front drainage point that looks to be the high point of the yard.

    • yes

  • Have you tried hosing the area to see where the water goes or pools?
    .

    • not really. rain water doesn't stand much. water goes towards centre in the backyard, remains stagnant and absorbs in floor

    • have seen a small part going through the under-layer of the fake grass

      • "remains stagnant and absorbs in floor"
I'd be uncomfortable with that if it was my place
        .

        • yes it does look uncomfortable even though its gone after some time. Its just keeping that in mind i cant think to open up the tap in backyard and say get some dirt clean on anything. Either it will stay on floor or may land up on the fake grass making it dirty

  • +3

    Astrotrash

    • -1

Saves time and maintenance though, nothing wrong with that.

      • Good for the dolphins all the micro plastics washing down the stormwater drain.

    • still feel my front lawn looks better than my neighbor's natural weed Jungle
