How they make this stuff is messed up…

    • Yeah given today's ultra-woke tendencies, I'm surprised foie gras still exists tbh

      • +2

It's funny because veganism in particular lines up with wokeness so well and yet it's rejected. Likely due to the fact you actually have to do something, as opposed to simply grandstanding.

        • +2

I suppose the fact that foie gras is a very niche thing helps it slide under the radar a bit?

btw not all vegans / vegetarians are placard-bearing, paint-throwing protesters. I personally know a guy who simply treats veganism as a personal choice, and you wouldn't know he's vegan unless you watch his eating habits.

          • @andresampras: the french like the chinese DGAF about that stuff when it comes down to culture and cuisine

yeah i cant stomach this, so to speak, because the duck already has

          • @andresampras: Right, and I didn't even know it was legal here which kind of threw me a bit. Veganism like anything that comes under the "progressive" banner will all have their share of passive supporters. Though I like to believe people can speak up about it without necessarily being a mega douchewaffle about it. I've been that (profanity) before and obviously it doesn't resonate with Joe blow.

          • -4

@andresampras: As it shoud be, a choice and not a ideal that is pushed on everyone like today with gender transition which is demonic.

            • @Jasonio: I assume that like the goose version, they have to force-feed the duck via a tube stuffed down its neck, for months or more, to induce the fatty liver. That is cruel, end of story. Any fois gras that is produced via force-feeding should not be legal to 'farm' or sell in Australia.

What next? We introduce bull fighting here? Bring back tail docking of 'show dogs'? Embrace sow stall pig farming again?

              Sheesh, don't get me started.

Any informed animal liberationist should neg any fois gras deal posted on OzBargain.

          • +2

@andresampras: …so like almost all vegans, then

Which reminds me of a joke

How do you know if somebody is a special snowflake who's triggered by vegans

            Don't worry, they'll tell you

        • Isn’t it that you DONT do certain things as a vegan? That you abstain?

      • Being woke is bad for society but each to their own.

    • -4

How is it messed up its very normal and delicious.

      • -1

Educate yourself on how foie gras is produced.

        • Lol I know how it is produced and trust me there are way worse things that get produced.

It's interesting seeing where the line on animal cruelty starts and ends on OZB - this deal gets comments such as yours, yet the endless KFC deals (whose chickens are probably treated just as badly) gets dozens of upvotes every time and no-one really ever says anything about the conditions the chickens were raised in.

Not that I'm having a go at you in particular, it's just that foie gras obviously has that stigma, yet brands like KFC whose animals arguably have been treated just as bad gets a free pass.

      • +7

(whose chickens are probably treated just as badly)

This is pretty unlikely, simply because of the laws we have here. You can't make foie gras in Australia because force feeding is illegal, it's all imported. I agree KFC Australia and all chicken produces should be really called out on their behaviour, particularly when you look at the improved laws they have overseas and the constant animal cruelty cases that pop up with large abattoirs

But chickens aren't force fed up to a third of their body weight a day in order to enlarge their liver to 10x the size in a way that would absolutely cause death if they weren't being slaughtered first. The death rate of these birds prior to slaughter is also 10x normal. It's a barbaric act of cruelty to do this to an animal. Chickens can be well treated from birth to slaughter and we should push for this. Foie gras means that the animal was absolutely tortured prior to death and simply shouldn't be eaten at all.

Im not a big one for going woke but this is just another level of evil. Probably the most cruel animal process that is still condoned (in some countries).

    • Im tempted to vote down as its not a a good deal as you have to sell your soul as well as pay for it.

    • -1

No, its just that it is based on a western country’s traditions. There are other countries where they do much worse and who get a free pass because…….woke reasons.

The only traditions that are regularly lambasted are from western countries.

        Re:

'The only traditions that are regularly lambasted are from western countries.'

I agree that Western countries (and Westerners by extension) cop a hugely disproportionate amount of 'woke flack'; simply because we are an easy target as we tend not to bother even trying to combat it. That said, there are numerous non-Western traditions that are widely (and quite rightly) condemned by 'woke' movements, and normal/rational progressive thinkers alike. Some that spring to mind are:

        Animal cruelty examples
Desecrating wild animal populations or 'farming' animals (in tiny boxes) to acquire things like tiger penis, rhino horn, bear bile, etc., for 'traditional (bullshit) medicine'.
Cock fighting, bear vs. dog fighting, mongoose vs. snake fighting, etc.
Elephant 'breaking' (which in many cultures involves tying them down spread-eagled on the ground for extended periods).
There are many more, but compiling this list is depressing me, so I will move on …

        Human cruelty examples
Female circumcision, which is big in Africa, among other non-Western places (personally I am against male circumcision as well, but that's another story).
Tooth knocking (this involves knocking out women's teeth when they reach a certain age).
The caste system in India (blatant apartheid, just under another name).
Legally sanctioned corporal punishment of wives by their husbands.
