  • The olympus model names confuse the hell out of me. I have an EM1 M1 and have no idea how it compares to this model

    • I think it goes like:

      EM1 is the 'pro' series.

EM10 is the cut down version. Like the entry into the advanced mirrorless.

      EM5 comes between the 2.

EM5 mk3 should have a more updated sensor than a em1 though i would expect. I dont think there would be much that em1 beats the em5 mk3 at.

      Edit:

      https://cameradecision.com/compare/Olympus-OM-D-E-M5-III-vs-…

25% more mega pixels. 4k video. 30fps vs 10. Lighter, smaller.

      • Thank you so much!

      • EM5 Mk iii is kind of like an EM1 Mk ii squeezed into a smaller body. OM Systems (yay, I got it right, I think?) has just released the OM5, which I believe is barely changed over the EM5iii.

They have switched to the OM designation, so I think we can expect an OM10 to come out at some point. It may or may not be an upgrade over the current EM10 Mk iv though.

We now have OM-1, E-M1X, OM-5, E-M10, and I think there’s still a PEN somewhere in the mix. All others are superseded models, including this one (though as mentioned, it doesn’t really matter since it’s pretty much the same as the just released OM-5 anyway).

Who knows what will happen with the EM1X. Bit of a niche product, so they may even drop it.

Quite a lot of camera for the money here though, any way you slice it.

        • I completely forgot about the move to OM dropping Olympus.

After using m4/3 for years i left for Fuji. When it came out m4/3 was so much more practical having so much more portability. Now side by side against my xt-30 its essentially the same size. Since moving to the 27mp apsc i havent really found i time i need more MP or better light performance. Something i often ran into on the Olympus.

    • Goes E-M1 -> E-M5 -> E-M10. E-M1 has all the features, body shape is like a small DSLR with grip. E-M5 has most of the features of the E-M1 but in a smaller, sleeker sized body that includes the weathersealing from the E-M1. E-M10 is the entry level version - no weather sealing, reduced video/photo capabilities, reduced menu setup & dials on body. Sensors/features are updated per generation, normally the E-M10 line is last to get new features if at all. The OM-D line (E-M1, E-M5, E-M10) all have the EVF hump at the top. Olympus also has a line of cameras below, the Pen line, which are smaller and geared towards more casual photography than the OM-D line. Within this line there were some enthusiast-grade bodies like the Pen-F and E-P7 which have now been discontinued for some time.
