Tips on Moving to Brisbane

Hi Ozbargainers,

Need some opinions.. Work may need to relocate me to Brisbane this year. I have spent little time there so I want to hear from people on their thoughts about what its like, particularly compared to Melbourne. I'm a social person and like living in 'trendy' areas (near cafes, bars etc), also like green areas - so if there are any suburbs you can suggest that would be appreciated too. I've never lived away from home before so it's a big decision to leave behind my life and start again.

thanks!

    One word - humidity.

      Another word - racism.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted as it's a valid point. Having grew up in Sydney, I've lived in Brisbane for over 20 years and I have experienced more racism here 10 fold. It's not as bad as ~10 years ago, but still happens.

        • +4

Seconded. I moved here a little over a decade ago and have worked in customer-facing roles, so I hear a lot of it.

      • -3

Are these "racists" in the room with us right now?

        • Not sure what you're are getting at, so please break down your question for me.

          • @Steakz: What I am getting that, is that people cry racism constantly. It wasn't directed at you anyway.

            • +2

@brendanm: Sure there are some that do, but to deny/knock it back when it's mentioned is absolutely the wrong way to go about it.

              • -2

@Steakz: Sorry, I should affirm people's delusions instead, my mistake. I forgot that's what we have to do these days.

                • @brendanm: Right, and how did you come to a conclusion that @AustriaBargain is delusional about what he said? Do you know him personally? Does he have a history of "crying" racism?
                  Just curious.

                    Yes.

How did you know he is a he?

                    • -1

                      @brendanm: You just told me.

And that is intriguing, where are such examples?

                        @Steakz:

                        You just told me.

No I didn't. You assumed it. I followed along.

And that is intriguing, where are such examples?

If only you had the tools at your disposal to find this information. Perhaps one day we will have the technology

                        • -1

@brendanm: Haha "Followed along" That is definitely up for debate!
Sorry but I'm not that invested, tho I'm sill curious as it seems you and @AustriaBargain have a history? Since you said you know "the individual" personally!
                          Guess we will never know.

                          • @Steakz:

Wouldn't be much of a debate, as it's there in black and white that you said it.

Please show where I said I knew them personally?

                            • @brendanm: Morning! Thought you said you did, must have just skimmed over text.
The only black and white is the colour of the text and the background it was written on.
Words/meaning/context is up for debate my friend, I'm sure we will touch on that pretty soon!
Now, I have no reason not to believe AB, which is why I agreed with him going from my own personal experience. You went on to "accuse" AB without providing any evidence! I'm genuinely curious as I'm quite passionate about the topic.

You also class everything bad that happens to you as racism? Sad.

                                • @brendanm: Heh you are getting desperate there, seems you have hit your ceiling! It is a common pattern for racist deniers to be racist them self, take a close look at yourself buddy!

ladies and gentleman hes right here! god that was fun!

Edit: ooof that auto correct was nasty.

                                      • @Steakz: Yep, you literally just did what I said that people do.

                                        • @brendanm: @brendanm 🤡

Buddy, you are dodging questions, acused me of crying racism without any basis and sayings that i did something what you said people do! You're rumbling words now.
No point to remain in this thread, people will draw their own conclusions from our exchange.
Enjoy the rest of your day, good luck.

                                          • @Steakz: You literally just said I was being racist for saying that people claim racism for everything. I appreciate you proving my point.

people will draw their own conclusions from our exchange.

Not sure what that has to do with me, or why I should care.

                                            • @brendanm: @brendanm Technically I did no such thing, and you keep rumbling on about some point that you have???
You are a extremely narrow minded individual which explains why you don't care. Being ozb lappy with 15K+ comments in just over 4 years, means that luckily majority of population will not have to deal with you. bye
Again all the best and good luck to you.

The word is rambling, not rumbling, I let it go the first time.

      • Not true I had a nice Asian lady hold the door open for me at the shops yesterday.
At the green grocer a nice Indian couple say Hello walking by just being friendly. And another Asian lady let me jump the que as I only had 2 items

I grew up in Brisbane as a brown kid. It wasnt too bad for me when I was young but now that Im older and wiser, not being white there certainly wasnt to my favour.

  • +4

Suburbs in Brisbane are boring I reckon. If you like to be near popular bars, only CBD/Valley are options IMO. In saying that, I personally love Brisbane over Sydney/Melbourne.

  • +3

I have a feeling you’re going to be let down mate…

  • +1

Brisbane lifestyle is great IMO, but for different reasons to Syd/Melb. Don't come expecting to find a similar experience to Melbourne. Embrace the warm weather, outdoor lifestyle etc.
There's still good coffee etc, but far fewer options.
Plenty of green leafy suburbs. Plenty of good cafes in the burbs but look at inner city suburbs if you want the bar scene.

I want to hear from people on their thoughts about what its like, particularly compared to Melbourne.

What specific questions did you have?

    My thoughts:

When I was in Brisbane, I woke up at 8am Mon - Fri, headed out of the house, usually go back inside to drop my jacket back, walked to the station, got on the train, and went to work, got home in the evening, showered, had some dinner, jumped on the computer to finish up some work, do some personal activities, then went to sleep. On the weekend, I would head to the shops to buy some groceries, maybe check out a restaurant, or go for a drive.

It used to be great. Since the migration of the mexicans north, it is overcrowded. Food is better in Melbourne. Check out the Brisbane subreddit for more info.

like living in 'trendy' areas (near cafes, bars etc), also like green areas

You basically need to live in riverside suburbs close to the CBD. Places like Hamilton, New Farm, Teneriffe, etc.

    • and possibly be affected by floods in future

  • +1

    Go live in New Farm

    • Sounds like a new reality show

      • +1

New Farm is Brisbane's Fitzroy/Carlton equivalent.

  • +1

Live near your workplace to reduce travel time as you mostly won't be going anywhere on weekdays.
Then go out to CBD / inner cities on Friday night / weekend.

If your workplace is in CBD then might as well rent a unit nearby.
Walk to work and enjoy the night after work then walk home.
But if your workplace is in Logan, then don't live there.

Its a backward overpriced boring dump full of awful food, poor service and bigoted insular people who mentally live in the 1970's. A youghurt has more culture. Get a new job and don't move here. Best tip ever

Brisbane is not a bad place, in fact there are many areas that are quite nice. But it’s hard to think of a single good point that characterises Brisbane.

For example, I love Melbourne for the people. It feels like a community, people tend to be friendly, and there is an atmosphere of culture and diversity.

I love Sydney because it’s the most beautiful city in the world. The harbour, the high quality of housing, the beaches, and the stunning CBD.

I love Canberra for the bike paths, the quiet lakes and mountains, the sunsets, the density of nature, the seasons.

I love Brisbane because…. can’t think of anything in particular, except perhaps the warm weather, and the fact that it’s only 1 hour to amazing locations like the Gold Coast, the hinterland, the glasshouse mountains, and the Sunshine Coast.

    • +3

      the high quality of housing

Opal Tower has entered the chat

      • Sorry should edit: high quality of houses.

But the reality is that the quality of apartment buildings is also very high, except for a very small number of developments by dodgy developers, which get massive media coverage.

  • +1

Brisbane to me is like if Adelaide and Sydney/Melbourne had a baby. If you like cultural stuff like theatre, stay in Melbourne.

  • +1

I loved Brisbane the most except for the reason I left for Sydney. The weather.
Brisbane hot and humid 5 months every year. Give me more wind and rain in Sydney any day.
Brisbane lacks the culture of Melbourne but has less crazy people stabbing up trains (still has some tho).
Brisbane will be more boring than Melbourne so make sure the dollars for your relocation are worth it.

I lived in the suburb of East Brisbane from around 2015-19ish, it was an absolute blast. It's so close to the city (5-10 min drive as you can easily get on to the storey bridge) as well where all your trendy cafes and bars are. Definitely my recommendation.

    • +1

close to the city (5-10 min drive

Last i remember , traffics was a nightmare on Stanley St. 8am and Vulture St. 5pm

Still a very nice suburb, you get Gabba stadium nearby with mass crowd and road closure during event.
Under half an hour drive to Manly beach.
New train station under construction nearby Gabba.

      • +1

Yes, avoid roads if it's rush-hour, or weekends, or there's an event on etc etc lol but it's so good because it's easy to get onto the Toll roads to go up North, or South, or to Ipswich etc.

  • +1

Sherwood, Corinda and Coorparoo are also nice leafy suburbs that are fairly close to the city (and on the train line).

    • +1

I'm a social person and like living in 'trendy' areas (near cafes, bars etc)

Not sure if those suburbs really fit the bill. Although I would recommend Sherwood if you can handle the quietness, it is really pretty around there and there are a couple of nice cafe's and restaurants.

For bars and cafes I would go New Farm (moneyed hipsters and closest to the Fortitude Valley clubbing district), West End/South Brisbane (main strip of bars/cafes has a bit of a coastal town vibe), East Brisbane (not a lot of bars but a few pubs around and a lot of musician sharehouses), or Paddington (jocks and rich kids).

      • Don't know when you were last in Brisbane, but Coorparoo has some very trendy parts these days. I get dirty looks being there.

  • Thanks for the tips. Sherwood does indeed look very beautiful and happens to be near work

  • No daylight savings, so wind your clocks back one hour and ten years.

I know it's old, but still amusing.
Claims by Premier Peter Beattie that daylight saving in Queensland would increase the rate of skin cancer are absolutely untrue, a cancer body says.
