TP-Link RE305 Range Extender Crashing Caused by Smart Xmas Tree Lights

Wife bought some new smart Christmas tree lights that she attempted to connect to our Wi-Fi network and then couldn't figure it out so just ran them without the smart function. I think they may have been from Kmart but she can't remember. (Edit: found the box and they are Mirabella Genio Wi-Fi 1.8M 190 LED Warm White Easy Tree Lights With Star)

However around the same time as they were put on the tree I noticed that our tp-link RE305 Wi-Fi range extender started to crash at least once or twice a day requiring a power cycle to fix the issue (red light on).

I've heard that LED lights can cause interference but I think this is more related to the smart wifi function of the lights instead as they are about 5 metres from the extender. Guessing that the lights are constantly looking for a network or something and causing the crash.

Took me a week or two to figure out that it was related to the lights, haven't had an issue since we packed them away.

I probably should have just connected them up to the network properly but couldn't be arsed… :)

Anyone else had similar issues, or a lightbulb moment when they read this post (pun intended)?

That's pretty smart that the lights can take out the Wifis :)

If you wanted to take out someone’s wifi you could just setup a Christmas tree on their doorstep and they wouldn’t suspect a thing.
