Suggestions Please: Camry Vs Impreza

I had previously asked for a poll to request help for choosing a car, and I still haven't really made a decision, but have somehow narrowed down to 2 sedans:

  1. Toyota Camry Ascent (petrol) - RRP ~$35k
  2. Subaru Impreza 2.0i L (petrol sedan) - RRP ~$31k

Both the above are entry level models. I have driven the Camry and liked it, but haven't got the chance to drive the Impreza yet so that may help me decide too.

Key difference that I have noted is of course the Impreza is 4k cheaper but seems to be a 2l engine compared to 2.5l for Camry. There's of course other differences in interior and some bits etc.

Wanted to know what your views are, and importantly, why you went with your choice if possible.

Make sure you test drive it, see if you like the CVT transmission and the lackluster 150 odd horsepower. Sluggish and underpowered.
Camry Ascent has over 200hp on 8-speed Auto.

Get a Kia Stinger before it disappears forever. Rare species. Packed a punch. Gonna be a classic.

    • Thanks.. Stinger seems out of my budget.

Why Impreza vs Camry and not Impreza vs Corolla or Liberty vs Camry?

I don't need a Camry sized car so chose Impreza. It drives OK (had some as rental cars last year)

    • Corolla RRP seems to be almost same as Camry.. and Liberty doesnt look like its there on the website.

More importantly, did you end up going to Vietnam? I don't recall a conclusion.

    • Haha no I didnt..

    Toyota camry.

Bigger, cheaper to service, more parts available, better resale value

    • +3

Yes, but an Impreza is basically a WRX /s

      more parts

It's a new car, you don't need parts for next 10 years 😜

And camry is like driving a yet another taxi!

      • And it’s not like there aren’t any Subarus around. Plus Subaru are known for lots of parts being interchangeable across models.

      • You obviously haven't driven a taxi to know that they buy Camrys for a reason.

        • Im beginning to think only taxi drivers buying them as Toyota's number #1 selling car is Hilux now.

          • @boomramada: If you spend all day on the road they must know a few things you don't.

Toyota's number #1 selling car is Hilux now

Along with Ford Ranger and other dual cab utes. All because of asset write off, no FBT and tax deductions. Pretty much vote buying from the government as a gift to tradies and agricultural sector.

        • Tacos are Camrys for one main reason: hybrid fuel savings. They are the right size, cheaper to run.

    @spackbace

Have you ever had a potential Camry customer cross shopping with an Impreza?

    • +3

      Not for a while

Tbh not many ppl mention impreza these days!

      • Why's that?

        • +1

Because Subaru keeps losing market share?

Camry is as near as you will get nowadays to a full-size sedan, Impreza is half a size smaller. So if the room inside is a factor, that works in the Camry's favour.
Plus, Toyota servicing, reliability, resale value etc.

  • 2 Grands extra for the hybrid

    half the fuel consumption

    much higher resale value

Oh forgot I probably get most of the negging!

    • +1

Exactly. At $2k over the base model, this is a no brainer.

      Huge wait times tho

Get them in fleet white. You can get one of those next week right? They always make fleet customer cars to keep big contracts!

Camry for sure, heaps more substantial car.

Impreza was my pick in 2015 vs corolla and mazda 3. mom ended up going with mazda 3. The latest camry exterior looks pretty good. Impreza in general has better build quality and "sportier". With that comes a more complicated design and extra servicing costs. Also probably smaller for things like cabin space.

    • With that comes a more complicated design and extra servicing costs

People seem to love life getting complicated :D

    • +1

Really, Impreza is better build quality than Camry? Thought it'd be the opposite

      • +1

better/more fancy. they also made chassis improvements. toyota just rinses and repeats it's design with a new exterior. More reliable but boring.

        • +1

          More reliable but boring

If you enjoy going to your mechanics. Or like Range Rover owners where you pay for the car and it spends more time at the dealers than your place.

  • +1

Camry is going to be a hell of a lot cheaper in maintenance and running costs imo

  • :D

Dont buy on our rec. Go drive both and decide. I personally preferred the impreza when I was testing cars. Seats were more comfortable and i liked the grip from the AWD.

    • Thanks.. will try that
