Why Is The Second Hand Gaming PC Market So Inflated?

I'm in the market for a cheapo gaming box for fortnite.

I was considering the techfast 3060 deal($900), but thought I'd have a look on marketplace and try to find a bargain.

I couldn't find a single machine below the price of techfast's deal. Most similar spec machines are listed around $1500

How's bout that aye cobbar.

Buyers want to buy at the lowest possible price.
Sellers want to sell at the highest possible price.

A seller almost always thinks their product is worth more than it is… Before they get no bites.

Not everyone knows about TF etc, and sellers are hoping they only compare to HN

Yeah as above , you can't compare TF with private sales or even other retailers for that matter.

Even some Ozb here despise TF for whatever good or bad reason , and saying TF deals are not comparable to others despite the bargain.

But i for one just after the bargain on best spec without paying for premium brand / models that could have nett you upper-tier models with next-level performance instead, whilst others would want to invest 50% of their system budget on case + PSU alone ; just to make sure it doesn't blow up or burn your house down yet still happy to use a $5 toaster or $10 kettle everyday.

Part of the problem is the fallout in GPU prices since the top of the market. Those who have a PC to sell know how much it cost to buy, and unwisely think they can get a significant percentage of that second hand. However the world has moved on and better prices can be found new.

To an extent, this is also a problem with aussie merchants who don't want to let go of inflated prices. And finally, look at Nvidia, still trying to extract higher prices with their new cards.

Up and down the line, people really HATE accepting that prices have to fall.

TF are cheap because of volume and corner cutting. The average TF buyer cares only for the number written on the CPU and on the GPU. They don't care about anything else. That said, TF are priced accordingly so there is no scam. Those marketplace and gumtree sellers on the otherhand that blatantly rip off computer illiterate parents selling absolute rubbish legacy PCs with the rgb fans and then selling them as gaming pcs. well, they can burn in hell for the damage they do to the gaming community.

    • Not really, even an overpriced pos PC, still brings a young gamer into our big wide world. Inevitably they will discover that they were betrayed, and build their own. It's the cycle of the world, it's savage.

  • Looks like other buyers are willing to pay higher prices than you, so sellers sell to them instead of you. Thats the way the market works.

isn't Fortnite available on the consoles? aren't they cheaper than a PC these days?

as far as high cost of 2nd hand PCs go, lets look at my 2nd system, as I recently upgraded to a new case mobo cpu, gpu and had older stuff left and if I was to sell here's the breakdown

original is Ryzen 5 2600 cpu, with fan (at least 100)
RX 580 8 gb video card (bought new 18 mths ago not way back at 1st release) (175)
    Gigabyte Aorus B450 Mobo (150)
16Gb Gskill ram (new sept) (100)
    New 512 gb NVME (50)
    New 2 TB HDD (85)
    New 750w PSU(80)
    Mid tower case (50)
Not to mention legit install of win 11 pro

that's 790 just there at reasonable pricing

So it doesn't take much to add up with 2nd hand goods and this is decent quality brands not cost cutting stuff

The only benefit you get from buying new cheap systems are warranty and shipping included
