For a second I thought it was being sold for $200. Got very excited.

    Super sharp with great bokeh!

Yes, fantastic lens, but $1218?! They were giving them away with a camera purchase a couple of years ago.

Very, very nice bokeh, but I sold mine since it somewhat replicated what I already had in my full frame system. If I'd not required GAS funding though, I would have kept it. My Olympus is still one of my favourite hands-on cameras.

      • Really? Are you sure it is not the f/1.4 version?

Spend $2000 on an OM-1 Mk II camera from a grey importer, they would throw in the lens
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/568450

The current deal is Australian stock

Other things about that old deal that you referred to
        1) the Mk II had been superseded for 7 months
        2) it asked people to put an extra $800 towards an older model camera instead of putting it towards a newer one (ie $2000 - $1200 for a grey f/1.2)
        3) there aren't many kit offers on f/1.2 lenses; not much point waiting for the next offer to roll around

        • OM-1 Mk II?

No…DigiDirect is not a grey importer. Not sure where you got that from. That deal was on Australian stock, from Olympus Australia via authorised retailers (Digidirect included). I purchased an E-M1 II in that deal (body only), with Australian warranty, and received the 45mm 1.2 by redemption from Olympus. I did this through Ryda a week before the DD deal you linked above, but it was the same redemption deal. I paid more than I needed to :-( …the DD deals were better. There were various packages available around the time - mine was body only at $1789 with the choice of a 1.2 pro lens by redemption…I could have had it closer to $1500 had I waited a week for DD via eBay!

It was a great deal though. Beat the hell out of this deal no matter how you sliced it, but unfortunately we probably won't see it again. It was just prior to Olympus' imaging business being sold to JIP.

          • @Banj0: EM1 mk ii

Mixed up the deals and sellers etc.

            Sorry to hear what happened.

To me, I have an EM-1 and a good zoom lens so, I'm happy with this active deal.

          • @Banj0: Do you use 2 systems?

            • @SomeGuyOnOzB: lol…I have too much gear. I use three systems regularly, but find more pleasure and convenience in using my Olympus. I left it at home for a recent trip, and regretted it.

              • @Banj0: :D

Which systems do you use and are you a professional photographer?

                • +1

                  @SomeGuyOnOzB: No…I'm a keen enthusiast. Who'd be a professional these days!

I use Pentax K mount, Sony E mount, and Olympus/Panasonic M43 mount cameras. The Pentax K-1ii and Olympus E-M1ii are my two favourite cameras to use - I tend towards using the K when I want to take landscape or astrophotography shots, and I use my E-M1ii for wildlife and macro mostly. My Sony is old (A7), and I'm not that fussed on the experience of shooting with it. The A7 is a lovely size though, and I like carrying it around with a small prime. It doesn't make me smile like the E-M1ii or K-1ii though.

I have a buddy who shoots an A7Riv with Sony's excellent 200-400mm. It has a low light advantage over my E-M1ii plus Oly 100-400mm, but to be honest I don't feel that he gets better shots than I do. I know another photographer who is in both systems, and he still gets fantastic shots with his Oly gear vs the Sony…but I'd say that he snags more of them on the Sony now. Bit more weight to be carrying though.

  • Olympus cameras are now geared towards wildlife photography, and this is the only real advantage they have over other camera systems. I don’t know why you would waste $1200 on a heavy portrait lens that is no better than a cheapish 85mm f1.8 lens on full frame bodies. If you are doing that kind of photography, you’d be better off with a full frame camera, plus you’ll save money on an equivalent lens.

    • Still though, they are very capable cameras, and I think the bokeh on this 45mm (if I was to be snobbish about it, and I am), is right up there with the best, and I would venture to say that the images it takes beat any 85mm 1.8 I have ever seen purely because of this rendition. I think you need to move to the premium glass in any other system to beat this, and then you’re up into and more likely above the same prices.

But yes, if you were to buy a camera purely for portrait work, then it probably should be a full frame, or perhaps better still medium format if you can afford it (often used in studio work). If you find yourself liking micro four-thirds, don’t like carrying multiple systems, and want a really nice portrait prime to throw into your kit, then this lens is a good pick. I’d prefer it at $1k though, and they can be had for $800-$900 on the used market if you’re patient. Such lenses as this are almost always coddled by their previous owners, so they are usually in very good condition used.

I have 1 portable system that I can even bring into concerts.

If I started with a 2nd system, I'd need time to learn that, space to store it, double up on chargers etc … ? Plus some of the times I wanted a portrait style lens, weather resistance was a good idea and this has that.
