Reporting Cars Parked in Disability/Accessibility Bays without a Permit?

Was at a shopping centre carpark. I told them do you see the signpost? They played dumb.

Just want ppl to do the right thing for others that genuinely need those spaces, especially during busy times.

Is it illegal, but I couldn't find info on that… What are the channels of report?

Update- I took photos of it with plates+placard in view and submitted on Snapsendsolve yesterday thanks

Maybe the guy parking there had “emergency” diarrhoea 🤷‍♂️💩 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742637)

        I'd be spewing

      • totally full of shit.

That explains the “emergency” diarrhoea rationale.

    • all diarrrhoea is emergency diarrhoea

If it's a shopping center that doesn't have an agreement with their local council to enforce the restrictions there is nothing you can do as it is private property and the bays are not administered by the local government authority. That's the way it works in QLD anyway.

      ^^^this^^^

also, how do u know they weren't disabled?

OP said the person parking didn’t have a disabled parking permit (in the title)

Appreciate the sentiment here brad. A lot of disabilities are invisible, and reminding people of this is always important (as someone with an invisible disability and a permit, I appreciate you have brought this up! The number of times people yell at me is exhausting… not exhausting as my chronic illness, but sometimes it’s hard to park in these spots and deal with the chaos…)

But agree with others that the permit needs to be displayed.

  • If it is a council owned car park then you could use the snap-send-solve app but being at a shopping centre it could be operated by a third party. If it is the latter then your reporting options are quite limited and even if you did report it to the car park operator they may just decide not to anything about it or that dihd would ignore the fine.

    • In this case, it doesn't matter.

ACROD bays are legally enforceable regardless of where they are. Report away.

Edit: Interestingly, above comments suggest that may not be the case in QLD. (At least, not necessarily the case.) So I guess… screw people who need help in Queensland?

  • At my fathers medium sized centre the security guard told my dad to park behind them to block them in. He did that many times.

Screw those people taking disabled carparks.

But also screw those that belittle disabled people for actually using them. Had multiple instances of Karens belittling my wife for legitimately using them, despite the valid card in the window, and the limp, and the walking sticks/crutches/mobility walker then then pulls out of the car.

Next time you see someone without a card, yell out "Those carparks are for physical disabilities, not mental ones!"

    • It's such bullshit, hey?

Because of (profanity) taking advantage, people who genuinely need the bays get embarrassed for using them.

    • Yeah same here. In Bentleigh, dude was standing around trying to bags one of the 2 disabled car spots left. As soon as we parked in 1 he came over all agressive at my mums window saying "are you disabled? It's for disabled people" and quite pushy and strong. If the (profanity) had used his eyeballs he would've noticed the sticker on the front window. Or maybe if he'd waited an actual second for us to finish parking and get out, he would've had his all important questions answered.
Anyway I hope he learnt his lesson from what I said to him, when my parents answered and tried to explain. Entitled rude people are everywhere.

It is illegal. Fines can be anywhere from $200 to $1000.

Advice would be to take a photo showing offender's license plate. Call the ranger/council, call the police, report to centre management, use an app like https://www.snapsendsolve.com to report.

Also, thank you. People aren't aware of the levels of anxiety so many people face when leaving the house. "Will there be a spot for me?" "Will I be able to access the toilet?" "Will there be space for me?" It's enough to make you stay at home because you just don't want to deal with it. It is enough to make people… human beings with thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams, just give up and remain prisoners in their own homes.

So thank you for giving a damn.

    Edit:
    https://www.bluebadgeinsurance.com.au/blog/accessible-parkin…

    Good, state specific information there.

  • I appreciate you raising this. In all the sht towns of Australia where the ignorant and discourteous are concentrated, disabled bays are treated as loading and pick-up zones thereby denying access to permit holders who may actually need an accessible parking bay. Same goes for accessible toilets, they're for sensitive souls who prefer to poo in private.

  • This is an ongoing problem that will have no real solution as long as there are entitled people in the world.

I am forced to go to Southland in Melbourne very early in the morning to make sure I get a disabled car park before the shops open. Same with Aldi, I get there before the store opens so I can park in a disabled spot and minimise the distance I have to walk.

I find that the situation of entitled idiots taking disabled spots is growing exponentially, as my mobility decreases and life gets harder for me to get around. I value my independence and being able to manage things for myself. But sadly there is an element in society that would prefer disabled people not be allowed to leave home and impede the progress of able bodied (but mentally deficient) people.
