Moving HDDs from Synology DS218j to a DS920+

No doubt there's learned folk here who have done something similar.
I've just ordered a DS920+ and two 4TB HDDs.
Currently have a DS218j with two 4TB drives in RAID1.

I plan to use all four drives in the 920, probably in SMR, however the two new drives won't come for another month.

What's the best way to make the switch ?

Perhaps dumping it all back to the PC and wiping the current drives and starting afresh and then adding the extra two when they turn up.

Ive migrated from ds418 to ds920. Just go to the synology website. They will tell you which order to put the drives in. And migrate. When the new drives come in. Just add them to the remaining slots. Always back up before you do anything.

    • That'll definitely be getting a look but was keen for some real world user input too, so thanks :)

yeah i think because both are syno they are compatible you just put the old disks to the new house.
adding also easy just add and rebuild

    BUT
if you want to go from RAID1 to SHR (typo SMR?) Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) is Synology's automated RAID management system.:
im afraid you have to destroy your current raid and rebuild the new raid.

    hey, what if….
wait till the new nas and 2x hdds arrives.
set this up with the 2 new HDDs. as SHR with 2 disks.
put the old 2x HDDs in, hopefully it creates 2 different disk group (one SHR one RAID1)
then copy all contents from old hdd to new group SHR
then wipe the 2x old, destroy the raid1
add them as new 2x empty disks to the SHR.

im not super expert so dyo research as well

    • Yeah, I think starting the new NAS with the new drives as SHR, copying 218 's data to the 920, wiping old drives and fitting them to the 920 might be the least complicated, and safest, way to do it.

      • agree, once new nas setup, you can keep the old hdd inside old nas and as they are on the same wifi, you are now basically have 2 nas and you should be able to transfer data between them.
once done then you can just format the old hdds and then put in the new nas! no pc needed for temporary storage

        • Oh that's gonna long few weeks lol
          Thanks

          • @scottb721: If you can have your live data online when you have your new HDD's .. you can connect the NAS's on the same switch via CAT5/6 and use Synology's built in version of rsync

Basically put in new drives to the target NAS.
Format the new HDDs the way you like.
Setup the "backup" source and target.
Let it duplicate to the target.
            Remove the source and target.

I've done this in the past when upgrading hards and luckily had 2 synology's I could do this from.

This document is old but can give you some ideas.

  • You can just do a HDD migration and put the two old drives in the new Synology.

When the two new drives come in, create a new storage volume with the drives in SHR, copy the data across from the old drives, then wipe and add the old drives into the new SHR storage volume. That should work in theory - you should check the Synology page for any gotchas though. Reddit pages will also have people who've been in the same situation I'm sure
