Is It Possible/Legal to Transfer an Already Paid Invoice to Someone Else's Name?

Got a very odd question.

If you bought an item from a store and then later want to sell it. Is it possible to ask the original store to issue a new invoice in the new buyer's name (for warranty and tax deduction purposes)?

I didn't think this was possible or legal. I thought that the seller would have to issue their own invoice to the new buyer (though I'm not sure how they would do that if it's a private sale..unless they have an ABN).

I have asked for a store to do this before (once, and it was right after a purchase was made under the wrong name), but not all stores will be willing to alter receipts after a sale has been made (especially if it was days or months ago). Most businesses would not alter old sales records and most probably refuse this sort of request.

Nope, as this sale, you are the one selling/receiving the money, NOT the store that you purchased it from.

    warranty

Ymmv but might be worth reaching out to customer service of the manufacturer to see if any issues (in writing), many don’t have issue with secondhand claims (though many others do)

    tax deduction purposes

I was always under the impression if you get a written statement of sale, ideally with evidence of the expense occurred (photos, bank statement etc) then that’s sufficient for the claim.

  • Thanks the responses. I thought that was the case, but wasn't 100% sure

For some manufacturers, a copy of the proof of purchase is all that is required for warranty. They dont care about the name that is on the invoice, only the date of purchase to determine that it is within the timeframe of warranty.
