Nintendo Switch Joy Con Charging Grip

I have the qled switch kids Xmas I purchased a set of extra joy cons around same time and kids only just been playing these past few days.

They use it with console mostly in dock well for now pretty much all on tv not handheld yet.

It’s all connected up and I believe when they are done using it or turn it off at night and put if on sleep mode this still charges right?
It does not need to be left on to charge, im sure if left on it goes into sleep mode anyway.

You can an tell the console part of the switch is charging as you see the battery logo on top right hand corner, but how can I tell if joycons that’s pretty much connected to the console are also?
Does it get done in order like console then joycon etc.

Obviously as I have a spare set of joy cons as console came with a set
I got myself a joy con charging grip yesterday and I plugged this cable from it to usb port.

Again does the console need to be on when charging with this joy con charger or can be sleep mode?
I can’t really tell if the if the joy cons are charging in the joy con charging grip I got.

The lights on the charging grip are not charging lights but I read number of players and to be honest I have never seen all them light light up so makes sense it’s players.

But it be nice to know am I doing this right it’s not rocket science charging but I get no indication it is or have.

I don’t think my joy con’s are faulty as kids have used for hours but be nice to know if they are part charged or fully..or if faulty.

Same goes with the charging grip I got yesterday is that faulty?

I assume does not matter what usb port you plug it into at front of switch doc when charging the grip with provided cable.

I believe there is a third party charging device that lights up red then changes when charged but I already got this charging grip.
But surely i should be able to tell what joy con’s have charge left or if fully charged etc

The joycons get their 'charge' from the switch console.

If the console is plugged in or docked, then that transferred energy will be replenished on the console. If not plugged in or docked, then the console battery will be depleted by the amount required to charge the joycons.

Console can be 'off' or 'shutdown' and the joycons will still charge.

If you'd like to know how much charge there is in the joycons, connect them to the console and select 'controller' (icon) from the main menu. There you'll see how much charge is in each joycon or if it's charging etc

EDIT: The above is explained in this youtube video too, which took less than 20 seconds to search via Google. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baIjtyMPB4o

Well I searched for such vid but never seen this one.
I knew about the logo to right corner of console which shows you.
I knew about the control icon I might have to take another look at that again to see what I see.
Kids are using so will check later.

My supplied joy con’s white edition not that colour matters I’m trying to keep them on console all the time.
So went out and purchased a joy con charger grip.
I assume that any of the two usb slots at front of dock charges the grip?

So for me to see if the additional joy cons are charged I need to remove the white ones and slide on the others and check out the controller select just to see what % it has?

Seems crazy I need to slide the two white joy cons off and slide two others on to the console to see what’s showing as in charge.

But I will check it out but seems crazy having to do so just to check,
I started to wonder was my joy con charger grip even doing it’s job and I still don’t know as I would need to check current % and then get kids to use up and charge again when not in use.

Just so I know as the console with it’s orginal joy cons are connected to dock at all times apart from changing a game etc what’s happening to that battery or the joy con battery on this?

I assume the extra joy cons I’m having them use charged with a joy con charger grip once they use up battery on this there option are to use the joy con from console or obviously the console with cons attached.

My plan was for them to use the extra joy cons most of time and leave console with joy cons left in dock as is, if they want to play two players then all good the set on console is always charged.

So am I right that if console is charged in full and the joy con attached to console is charged and is still in dock and I plug in the joy con charger grip to front of dock by usb it does not matter which usb as I assume both do same thing then this should be charging?
As that’s one of the main reasons was no way to tell if it was but you explained I need to put them into console to find out.

    • In between changing games for son I don’t see what’s shown on the this vid or same style, maybe I need to change settings on it.

What exactly should I see on the console?

You see the console itself which is fully charged I see two joy cons coloured ones fo they represent the coloured ones or the white ones should I not see two sets of joy cons on the console or just the ones that’s attached to it?
When I add the coloured ones to the console it just shows on bar at side green with two blank.
      And the vid shows different.

Say I connect the charging grip to the dock plastic part which has usb on side two slots should I see this as charging on the console?
As you see the guy connecting a pro controller and shows on console should I see the charging grip on the screen as well as it’s plugged into the dock.

Honest I have owned consoles from a very young age but this one seems very weird how it works or what you’re trying to find out.

But i try again when sim is not on it but somethings not right

      • I think if you want to see the charge of the joy cons that are not connected you just need to turn them on and maybe go to the controller menu. As you've previously connected them to the console you should be able to see them when they're on.

  • Can you stop calling it qled? there is no such thing. You were corrected in your previous post too

  • This device is really bugging me i stick in the two spare joy cons all of last night to charge into the joy con charging grip to usb on side of dock.

I take them out of the grip and slot them into console and they show full battery on each side and middle is black/blank.
I assume as I think mentioned already it takes the battery life from the console to the joy cons, but within a few seconds or so these two joy con are them black/blank?

I had it on charge all last night while it was on sleep mode can anyone tell me what’s going on? Is the way I’m charging the joy cons with the charging grip not right?
That’s what the device is for to slot two cons into it and charge them up.
Is the usb slot on side of dock not working is the joy cons not working then he would not be able to use if so and is being on sleep mode not charging?

Can you tell me after a night of charging the cons the extra set I have not the ones that come with console why when I slot them into console it shows full battery each side then after a few seconds or so the charge goes as if no charge.

I can’t have faulty joy cons or I would over time if not charging not be able to use, I can’t surely have faulty joy con charging grip or could I? How can you tell.

No other devices I own or over the years had such issues knowing what your charging is doing it job.
If something is at fault I like to know what it is.

    Joy cons
    Charging grip
    Console
    Dock

All of which are new opened at Xmas well the charging grip was an after by to charge the extra joy cons
