Any Other High Quality Outdoor Clothing Stores - Non Big Brands

Hi All

I am looking for any high quality outdoor clothing stores - e.g. selling waterproof jackets and puffers that are not the expensive huge brands such as The North Face, Patagonia , macpac etc but similar quality

MacPac is not generally seen as one of the top level brands, although they do have some good stuff for everyday use. They're a step up from Kathmandu but they follow the same business model with high RRPs and then 'crazy' discounts when they go on sale.

It's a bit unclear what you're asking for, because you want high quality but not expensive. That doesn't really exist. If you want a good middle range, I would say Macpac when on sale is it. You'll find nearly all the big brands have fairly similar product ranges with a slightly different angle - ie Patagonia is green and ethical, North Face is technical and sporty, but they both have products that fill similar niches at similar price points. You might like to check out brands like Mont, Prana, Kuhl, Outdoor Research, and Mountain Equipment, but they are all fairly expensive because they use high quality materials. Look in stores like Paddy Pallin, or local independent outdoor shops in your nearest large city. You usually won't see the big discounts that Ozbargainers look for, because margins are relatively slim and many retailers survive because they offer customer service with genuine technical advice and deep product knowledge.

    • Thx mate that was an informative response. The question was gearing towards if there are any good brands that you are not paying a huge premium for the brand name. E.g in the mobile phone world, there are some really good lesser known than mid tier brands that are online only and are “bang for your buck” for that price range. I was wondering if a similar thing exists for outdoor apparels.

      • Right. Yeah I think the economics of the phone manufacturing business are quite different to those for outdoor gear. Pretty much everyone in the world needs a mobile phone, and the components for phones are all commodity items that are used across brands and in other electronic devices. So there’s room for lots of niche brands with different value offerings. That just isn’t the case for premium outdoor gear, which appeals to a small proportion of relatively wealthy people and where the components are more custom. That’s even more the case in Australia, which is a small market where many brands just don’t bother to set up distribution and those that do charge premium prices.

High quality and cheap are mutually exclusive.

    • How about water?
But as far as OP is asking, yep

Try macpac and look on the clearance racks. Often find Patagonia and Northface in "last year colours" for hefty discounts

  • big w has $4 t-shirts ¯\(ツ)/¯

  • You won't find what you are after.

Small local brands like One Planet & Wilderness Wear do make & sell raingear, but the prices are not cheap, unless they are clearing them out, or you can find them secondhand (sometimes like new) on sites like gumtree or fb marketplace, or specialized forums like bushwalk australia.

    https://wildernesswear.com.au/mens-rainwear/

I would suggest people start directing their money towards those companies & individuals who are not part of the apparent global corp/govt takeover currently going on, & that includes categories like clothing & in particular food.

  • I have two waterproof jackets - a thinner HH Loke jacket and a thicker Decathlon Tribord 100 jacket - both were $40ish. I've spent hours in heavy rain with both and they've been brilliant. Note your pants will get wet unless you have waterproof pants.

The Loke jacket was a one off eBay special so I recommend the Tribord.
