JB Hi-Fi Clearance Item Bought but No Longer Available

I bought a $944 dryer from JB Hi-Fi with a 10% off deal for around $850 using gift cards.

The site said it was available instore, so I put the order through and waited for the email to tell me its ready for pickup. I waited a week, and finally called them, and they told me it wasn't available anymore and I would receive a refund.

I don't really want a refund, I want a dryer. I'll probably go into a store now to make sure I can get one. Am I be entitled to an equivalent dryer, or do I get something else and take $944 off the price? Or will they only give me the $850 off?

They'll probably refund via an $850 gift card.

They will refund via the same method you paid.

    • The store has already provided the option
OP is being totally unreasonable demanding something that is simply not available

You have a right OP to receive what you ordered or your money back. Thats it. FULL STOP.
      No alternative Offers
No "sorry about that" gift cards

The store might offer you something else but thats entirely up to them.

Am I be entitled to an equivalent dryer

You're not entitled to anything other what you ordered or a refund. And since they don't have what you ordered, then refund it is.

Use the refund to buy another dryer.

Op got the 10% off deal and is now more keen on getting that same deal rather just buying something at the listed price..

Read the terms and conditions you agreed to when you put the order through and see what your options are. But saying that you are W.O.L. with getting the dryer or an equivalent, unless you get lucky.

Demand they give you an even better dryer for emotional damage and stress caused

You might say that. But imagine if retailers didn't show accurate stock, you buy giftcards (therefore locking funds in with them) on the provision of purchasing an item shown as available, you buy it and then after 1 week you have to follow up, at which time they advise no longer available and give you a refund back to the giftcard that still locks in with them.
You wouldn't have purchased the giftcard if you weren't wanting to buy the new washer. Plus in the extended timeframe you may have missed comparable offers with the retailer or even another.
At $850 value and a week to be told unavailable, I'd be pretty upset.

Good point but coming from a guy who shops a lot, I buy gift cards at a discounted rate knowing full well the slight hassles that might come with it…
It’s impossible to run a big business and have inventory levels perfectly accurate to a tee all the time.

I worked in manufacturing where stocktake was done monthly to make adjustments, covering off variation in raw materials used because some processes were influenced by humans.
Tracking dryers in and out is a lot simpler and there shouldn't be variation assuming a large business uses appropriate software. It's not like there would be theft of large whitegoods which might occur with say flash drives etc
          Piss poor really
          .

It does suck when that happens, but thats the gamble you take when you buy and pay with gift cards. The gift card purchase is not related to, nor is subject to X product availability. If I ever have a feeling of a possible refund, whether change of mind or possible oos for clearance item, I don't bother with GC.

All true. But whether or not you use a guftcard, you don't expect to wait a week to confirm an order and then have to follow it up yourself to find oos. If at time of purchase, that's fine and understable but they delay is just poor and leaves potentially less options for the purchaser. If their stock is that delayed etc, then they should make it clear to consumers prior to purchase so an informed decision can be made.

    Am I be entitled

    Yes, your being entitled.

You are entitled to a refund.
However, considering the first you heard was after calling them up, and considering there was a deal going on at the time, politely ask them to help you out with a deal.

You spent $850..you're entitled to a full refund of your initial purchase, back to the payment method you paid in (gift card)

  • So $945 gift cards only cost you $850 with 10% off …but the purchase price of the dryer was $944?

Ever heard of going in store and finding a dryer and asking for a deal? I got way more than 10% off doing this…

    • I should've read this before posting the same advice right under it!

Op, I have never failed to get 10% or more off a major whitegoods purchase unless what you were looking at is a famcy European brand. Get the GC, find a dude at jb to talk too about similar models and get a price you like. Even better if you give them a price to beat from TGG or Harvey Norman. On major purchases they will always negotiate even if it's on sale, you can penalty save a lot more than you think.
