How to Be Alerted When Wearing Headphones or Listening to Loud Music?

Hello

So, I need a way to be 'alerted' when someone needs my attention when I'm either recording/mixing with headphones or loud music, or using Wireless Headphones… both situations in which either I can't hear anyone knocking on my door, and/or when I'm recording with Microphones, and I can't have noise ruin the take etc….

I know on TV Shows you see those flashing red lights in Radio Studio's when they are 'on air' etc…. is there something like that which I can get to have on the inside of my room which has a Wireless Doorbell Button which I can put on my Bedroom door on the outside?

Or something similar, or just anything that might work for either silent or visual and/or audio alerts depending on what I'm doing?

It would need to work with the button on my door at the very minimum, but would also be great if there's a way to have it work on a different floor in the house too etc…. eg two buttons etc?

I know they have those weird little Pulse Oximeter looking Amazon Dash wireless buttons to order another box of dishwashing detergent straight from your Amazon Account - anything like that which I can get to use with my phone to make it flash and or vibrate/ring etc (and an app to make it work)?

Ideally. I need something wireless (with battery) for the Doorbell part as I can't really drill holes and stuff etc.

But the part in my room could maybe be plugged in or even powered via USB?

I'm not looking to blow loads of money - want to see if it can be done cheaply or for a reasonable amount?

So, what have you got?

Link me to any specific products if you know of them?

Thanks for your help

Some RGB LED strip lights (check Aliexpress / Amazon eBay) have LED lights that have either a wired or wireless remote, or ones that run on Bluetooth (usually paired with mobile phone running an app). You can remotely turn these lights on from a distance, so you'd just need to find a place to mount the switch while keeping in range of the bluetooth or infrared blaster.

There are also these things from Kmart. Not sure if they are RF remote or infrared.

my mate does this on his closed door when he's on work zoom calls so the toddlers know not to rush in.

I'm fairly certain they make doorbells for hearing impaired that flashes a light instead of making sound so I'd start googling along those lines.

  • Doorbell that vibrates your phone in pocket or smart watch on arm?

  • Keep it easy and just use a mirabella door sensor maybe or a mirabella motion sensor, will nearly instantly send a notification to your phone (and Apple Watch if you’re with apple).

Just leave the door open and put a sign for people to enter..

  • Does it have to connect to a doorbell if that’s just gonna be inside the house?

I know a few deaf people who just have wifi lights and their family members will use the app to flash them on and off when they want their attention. One of them even does it when her husband doesn’t answer his phone when she’s out. He calls back straight away, it’s brilliant!

You could either use an existing lamp and a wifi power plug, or get a wifi lamp/globe.

Put your mobile phone on silent in front of you and they can call if they need your attention.

Text message? Lots of options there from vibrate in your pocket, smart watch, Messages by Google on the web (or iphone/mac equivalent) so you can see them on your computer as notifications.

For me I use battery powered xiaomi buttons connected to xiaomi v2 gateways (which have an integrated speaker) and set the speaker to play a sound whenever the button is pressed using an automation via the app. The button has some adhesive on the back which I used to stick it on the door. The motivation for me doing this is that my house is large and when we are at the back of the house it is difficult to hear people knocking the door, so I just installed two gateways and play the doorbell sound on both of them.

For your use case you will need a xiaomi button and a compatible gateway (often sold in a kit with other sensors thrown in as well) and also a compatible smart light (for example Yeelight). You can go into the xiaomi app and set the automation so the Yeelight turns on and changes the colour to red. (I recommend purchasing another xiaomi button and placing it in a convenient location so you can turn on/off the light and change the colour back to white.)

Alternatively if you have the v2 gateway (it has a built in light and speaker which were removed in the later versions) you can set the automation so it turns on the light on the gateway. To turn off the light, press the button on the side of the gateway. Just make sure the location of the gateway is convenient and visible as the light isn't very bright and is designed to be used as a nightlight.

With my v2 gateway, I found that you must place the buttons within 5 meters range for them to work reliably. The range may be better on the newer versions. Also be mindful that the v2 gateways need to be plugged in to the wall and they are fat so they will block the neighbouring electrical outlets. The newer v3 gateway is USB powered and does not have this issue, but has no builtin light.
