Works fine for me on XiaoMi (MIUI 12 / Android 11)

    • No, you can use gestures but you can set them up through the nova settings.

    • +2

No issue here running a custom A13 ROM

    • Works fine on Pixel with android 13, Samsung was a little bit janky but was still functional.

TL;DR is the "home to recent app" behaviour isn't the same as other launchers.

  • +54

Also note it's been acquired by an analytics company - although they've so far apparently not used customer data (according to them).

A few posts about it on Reddit including an AMA that didn't go too well.

    • +1

      thanks :)

    • +2

Do you have the link to the ama?

    • For this reason I started using a different launcher. Before this I had used Nova for many years. It's a great app. :(

  • Love this app, bought it on 2 different accounts previously

  • Is there a way to have recently used apps at the top of the app drawer, instead of frequently used apps? Or another good launcher that does allow it?

    • +1

It is one of the options when you search using pull down gesture.

      • Thanks, hadn't noticed that.
Is there a way to have it permanently at the top of the drawer like the frequents though?

  • +2

Great value! I moved to Niagara Launcher a few months back and couldn't be happier though.

    • +1

Niagara is so good, I can't go back to grid layouts anymore.

    • +1

      How much is Niagara?

      • +1

Lifetime recently went up in price, I paid $18 but think it's $36 now. Maybe they'll have a sale eventually but they have a trial.

        • +7

          That's pricey for a launcher.

        • US$ 12 lifetime?? impossible, with US$ 12 i buy a Windows license

          • @VictorVE: Agree, ridiculous.. got office much cheaper from eBay ages ago and still going strong.

    • Yep I moved to niagara too, absolutely love it, best launcher out there! Well worth the lifetime subscription.

  • +20

I've been using this so long, I don't even know what the default experience for my phone is anymore.

  • +1

Launchchair is a good one too

  • +4

Don't see the point of this much more with recent Android releases on Samsung devices.

Was good back in the day though.

    • +2

Oh really? That good? I always have nova on my samsung gote 10plus

      • -4

Good for you. Note 10 isn't getting updated anymore. So doesn't apply to what I said…

        • I have android 12 and one ui 4.1
          Thats not the latest?

          • @CyberMurning: Android 13. One UI 5.0.

I question whether (not you) most here have actually used One UI in recent years.

Sure, an unsupported phone, I can justify it.

    • +3

What do you mean, the stock launcher on Samsung is crap, I use this on my S22 Ultra

        • +11

News flash - reviews are also opinions.

        • +3

The stock launcher is OK. But nova is better!

    • +4

The real reason for me is to get my layout back whenever I change phones. I can get used to any UI.

  • Dumb question but if I buy this using my google account "X" then I log into another phone with Google account "X" do I get it for free there?

    • +2

yes, it is essentially an app so if you buy it on your account you can use it on multiple devices.

    • +1

That's right. As long as the device is tied the same Google account used to purchase, you can install it across multiple devices.

    • +1

If it's the same account yes .

I have 2 tablets and a phone that are using the same account.

  • +19

People still use launchers? Stock is fine now

    • +5

Samsung's default is actually fantastic these days. Improved 10 fold compared to say S4ish days.

      • +2

Yep. Grab "Good Lock" for your Samsung phone and you can customise the launcher even further. I've no need for 3rd party launchers anymore.

      • Still no vertical app list.

        Does good lock fix that?

        • Yes, but there are better implementations. I personally go with the Microsoft launcher. Seems to improve battery performance as well.

          • @BadGiraffe: That's good to know. I myself would definitely get a launcher if I have a Samsung phone. For the ones that already like the Samsung launcher; I'd recommend that good lock module.

            • @Hahuh: After I got the One UI 5.0 update, I thought I'd give One UI another shot. Yes, Good Lock is definitely a must try for new One UI users. The first thing I did was make my app draw scroll vertically.

5.0 has improved things, but I might go back to the Microsoft launcher. Battery life with One UI is alright. Not much of an improvement since the last one.

    • +9

stock is certainly nicer but nova still remains super customisable in comparison.

      • -4

As above, Good Lock and Stock is all you need, even more so for Fold devices.

        • +4

well for you perhaps but i personally appreciate the customisation of nova!

    • +4

I remember when I used to care this much about customisation. Other things become more important.

    • +1

the default stock makes me rage and puke.. i'm sure it's customizable but i found it easier to install Pear launcher and go from there.

      • +1

Stock launcher makes me shidding and farding

    • +3

Stock has been getting worse and worse - imposing what google idiots think is trendy onto you (stoopid whitespace usually), rather than giving you the choice of how it works.

Nova ensures that you can get what YOU want.

    • Agreed although it is good for setting up a phone for seniors as you can lock things down

    • +1

Stock is missing basic things like being able to create folders in the app drawer. So stock is not fine.

    • Agree for Pixel, no need for launchers but it seems they can be an improvement on Samsung UI and devices.

Got Nova for $1 last time but have never bothered with it - no gestures. Also no point if they use more battery.

      • I still use Nova on Pixel 7 - I really like the ability to remove unused apps from the app drawer so it's less cluttered with junk.

I tried sticking with the stock launcher for a week or two but couldn't cope. Restored my Nova setup from a previous phone and all was well.

        • Depends what you are used to I guess.
I think the stock is fine, the most common/recent apps are quick to find from the bottom search bar, and just start typing the app name anyway.

Launchers and Roms were more necessary back in the old days of the XDAs and those phones, not necessary imo for pixels (probably for Samsung with all their junk is alright). Doesn't hurt to test anyway.

PS I just turn off animations and the pixel 7 very zippy.

  • +1

Is it safe to download and use everyday. Don't they collect your app data like banking details, emails, documents etc. Just curious to know. After Optus, Medibank, Eufy news.

    • +7

yeah it collects your bank details and credit card and takes a picture to upload to elon musk when you open an app. stay away

      • Please don't feed the conspiracy trolls

    • -1

That would be a crime, illegal apps are not allowed on Google Play Store. They might track your usage behaviour for analytics etc though

  • +1

Used Nova for years, but happy with Microsoft Launcher now on Android 13

  • This is very good, get it

  • +2

Nova Launcher used to be my GoTo launcher back in Android 7 or below
But then switched to Microsoft Launcher since Android 8

Since Samsung released the Samsung One UI in Android 9, its my default launcher till now

  • +3

The customised gesture feature is so convenient, I could launch my frequently used apps from an icon free screen

  • OLauncher CF a good free one

  • +1

Used to always use Nova Launcher, especially on my old LG G6 and my 2013 Sony Xperia Z which both frankly had terrible UIs. Now on a POCO, and the stock launcher is actually really clean and works well, so I haven't had to use Nova Launcher. Still a really good pickup though if your stock launcher isn't sufficient. For $0.10, it's a no brainer

  • +1

    I memba

  • does nova impact battery life ?

  • Can't live without this. Well worth it.

  • +1

Samsung one ui became a lot better in recent times…. Still purchaed for backup

  • -2

dont waste money on nova, it used to be really good but now lawnchair and hyperion are better and free :)

  • Worth it!

  • +2

Thanks DB, finally i can make use of my google opinion rewards

  • I use this on the Samsung s22. It's great! The backup and restore function makes upgrading phones pretty easy as well, everything right back where it was before.

  • +2

Moved to Niagara launcher and havent looked back

  • +1

I can't even remember when I bought this app, maybe for first pixel phone?! Still using it (the app, not the phone).

  • Get this and don't even think about it. Worth it for "doubleclick on homescreen for sleep" alone

    • +2

Which my Samsung S22 with Android 13 does without it by default….

Unsure what Android OS that was implemented.

  • +1

+1. tried so many launchers and still the best.

  • I'm not sure if it can do this. When I save a route using google maps, it saves the shortcut to the last screen. Can I use this app to make it save to a folder instead? Will be a help? Thanks.

  • What exactly is this? I have an Oppo Find X2 Pro… should I get this>

  • +1

I feel like every launcher are impacting the battery usage.

    • Why do you feel that?

      • Any launcher I tried always give me that experience. My phone is samsung S8 btw.

  • Any comments on using with a Galaxy Fold 3/4?

At 10c its worth the contribution just to support the developer

    • +2

Not great for the Fold phones. The developers have been notoriously stubborn when it comes to the Fold devices, stating that they have no intentions of supporting them. You can't have separate layouts for your internal and external displays, which makes it pretty much useless IMHO. Samsung's stock launcher is much better.

      • Thanks

    • Use good lock as mentioned above

  • How's compare to POCO LAUNCHER?

    • +1

I've used both, I prefer the current iteration of the Poco launcher. I found Nova useful on my older LG and Sony devices, but my Poco has held up really well for me with just the stock launcher.

  • I prefered (and still use) the old version.

Google killing off unread counts was a bit of a pain.

  • I used to use lucky patcher to patch the app and get prime features back in the day by rooting the phone. I purchased it even if I don’t have an android phone just for nostalgia. It has to be the best launcher. I tried so many but would always come back to this

  • Will this make it easier to open OzBargain ?

  • +1

Highly recommended, using it for 10 years so far

  • +1

Best launcher. 1st and last launcher i actually spent money on. :P
