Free Choc Mudcake in Store at Woolies Seaford, VIC [Caused by Pricing Error]

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Went to buy a choc mudcake this afternoon. It was on special at $5.50, but it scans at $5.95. When I made the personnel aware of the discrepancy, they deleted the item and gave it to me for free. He said it was store policy.
Interested in hearing if it works for you too.
Also, can anyone confirm this policy?

Great for you, but how is this a bargain??

  • They always did that, free if they have price error themselves

Not sure apply to all Woolies or not.

  • If you go around the cigarette counter at the front there's generally a price policy contract. If its higher than the advertised price either they have to match the lower price or you get it free as it is false advertising. Same thing happened when I was buying pork buns when they had it on special but it scanned the normal price. Its common practice to avoid being bitched slapped by the ACCC.

Their problems is they won't update their system to fix the price. If you go there again tomorrow it will still the same price error.

    The Item Free Policy:
If the price displayed at the checkout or on the customer receipt is higher than the shelf price, the customer is entitled to receive that item free of charge.
The Shelf Price is the price of an individual item that appears on a shelf label or shelf price label.
The Shelf Label or Shelf Price Label means the sign or label showing the price of individual items at the place where the product is displayed for sale to the customer.
The item free policy does NOT cover goods that are “item priced”.
The item free policy does NOT cover goods where the shelf price is $50 or greater.

  • Does not cover "item priced" whats this mean… Sounds exactly like the above shelf label that is valid too me….

    • I think it means if the actual item has the price sticker on it, ie an item has a reduced to 99c sticker on it, but scans at normal price, then it isn't covered by the item free policy.

This policy which guarantees accurate pricing is the reason shoppers should always be aware of the prices as they do their groceries. I keep an eye on the register as my items are scanned. Then if I spot a discrepancy, I allow the sale to go through, take the receipt to the main counter and then query the purchase. If I bought more than one item, I get only the first one for free. The rest will be at the correct price. Note: DO NOT question the price (ask for a price check) while you are still at the register, otherwise you wont get your freebie. It pays to write down prices of items as you load your trolley.

P.S. I have never failed to get freebies everytime I did this, at any store/shop. I got this tip from one of those money saving books about a decade or so ago.

    • You still get the discounted price if you ask while at the register.

"If the price displayed at the checkout or on the customer receipt is higher than the shelf price, the customer is entitled to receive that item free of charge."

  • Bought a deep fryer at woolies last year and it scanned way over. Couldnt believe it when she gave me a receipt for $0 and said "enjoy your free deep fryer"

  • Moved to Forum as it's caused by pricing error.

  • Woolies and Coles has always had this policy.

    • And I hope more people understand it is exclusive to those 2 stores.

Sick of people asking me for free stuff and quoting the pricing policy as law when the price scanned is different at a store I work at.
