Blue light blocking phone screen protector - Have I been using a faulty one all this time?

I bought a "blue light blocking" screen protector a while ago for my phone.
I always thought since the beginning that it was a bit different, under the sun it made my screen darker even from directly head on and the whole display would look "blue" under sunlight.
I thought up until now it was just how this screen protector was.

But someone commented on my screen protector being weird. That it was very difficult to see and that it was on "backwards" because the entire screen was not supposed to have a blue tint.
Then I sort of realised, maybe they made it wrong and the actual protector part is supposed to be the other way around. It makes sense right because if it's blocking blue it should reflect the blue back into the phone screen.
But the screen protector only goes on one way, it has a thin black border which is kind of hollow on the underside so I knew I was putting the screen protector on the right way when I put it on.

So do you think there is an error in the way my blue light blocking screen protector was made? Like the actual screen protector part was installed the wrong way around at the factory?

Does anyone else have blue light blocking screen protector? And how is your experience with it, is it the same?

    Looks like they blew it.

    Install a replying compare.

    No blues is good blues.

    • You mean manufacturer stuffed up?

Kind of disappointed. It was the one from Daiso by the way, with Japanese all over the package so I assumed if it was good enough for being sold in convenience stores in Japan it would be well made.

    Needs a poll.

Doubt its on the wrong way, sounds more likely its just a rubbish filter that dims all light.

TBH why even bother with a blue light filter - if you're worried about affecting sleep patterns, maybe dont use it near sleep time.

    • "that dims all light."

No it's more of a strong blue tint only under sunlight, which has the effect of making the screen hard to see. It's like it's blocking all other colours (not completely, but blocking like 50% of the other colours makes the entire screen look like it has a blue tint), and letting mostly blue light from the screen through to my eyes.
Either that or it's reflecting the blue light back at my eyes. I guess that means they made the protector the wrong way around.

"TBH why even bother with a blue light filter "

It was the only "premium" one I could find at Daiso. This one was tempered glass, while the others were all plastic.
I wanted just normal tempered glass, but the blue light blocking one was all they had.

    • JUst use a normal hardened glass screen protector and you wont have these issues
      Easy fix!

Does anyone else have blue light blocking screen protector?

If so does it work like I described in my post?

When indoors it looks completely normal. But as soon as I go out into the sun the entire screen has a strong blue tint and with phone brightness turned all the way up I can just barely see the screen. Again problem is only when under the sun.

Nope. Does your phone not have night shift built in? It changes colours to warmer yellow and reduces blue light.

      • Alright thanks. I guess mine is made wrong then.

As I said in another comment blue light from the screen is not an issue for me so I didn't buy it for that function. It's just in my case the protector is extremely blue under sunlight making the phone screen almost barely visible.
The experience is the opposite of night shift, imagine you had a "bluer" option maxed out instead of yellower lol.

No idea what you’re on about. Just take the protector off and use your phone as intended. They’re designed to be quite scratch resistant nowadays.

          • @Hybroid: "They’re designed to be quite scratch resistant nowadays."

Yeah I thought so too. Gorilla grass right? Well apparently it still scratches.
Not from bangs or dings, but from fine dust and dirt/sand in your pockets over time. And I think if some grains got pressed up against it by keys for example it would speed up the process.
I have a Garmin SQ smart watch which is also gorilla glass and that has managed to scuff up a bit (I think from dirty/dusty payment terminals) so I put a cheap protector on that as well. (not that the Garmin is expensive compared to a phone, but the protector was less than $2 so I thought it was worth it)

        • If it's blue under sunlight it is working as expected - blocking (aka reflecting) blue light from reaching your screen. Remember, it's a "blue light phone screen protector" and it indeed protects phone screen. The ultimate blue light protector would be a blue piece of paper. Did you try that?

          • @[Deactivated]: "Remember, it's a "blue light phone screen protector" and it indeed protects phone screen."

Oh I didn't know that. So it is working as intended and is meant to protect the phone's screen from the sun?
I thought it was supposed to block blue light coming out of the phone's screen. Guess I was wrong.

Paper blocks blue light? Didn't know that either.

"My eyes! The blue light filter does nothing!"

    • Yeah in my case, when under the sun the friggin thing seems like it's shooting blue light rays into my eyeballs.

I dunno, if it the screen protector material is backwards then maybe it's proof that it's actually blocking/reflecting blue light?? I mean if it was on backwards that's how it would be functioning I think.
The screen should be seeing the blue tint, and not my eyes.

  • Easy way to tell if its working
When you watch this video do you just see 3 headless people?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwLSwEdxH3o

if not, its clearly not working

    • Blue man group lol. I was worried you were trolling/linking to an upload of hostages being beheaded.

  • Just use a normal phone screen protector, then warm up the kelvin of your screen colour in settings. Set your screen to go into night mode on a schedule, as warm as you can handle without losing the ability to see everything clearly.

  • same, I order a clear one the next day.

    • Alright thank you looks like that's what I need to do then.
Turns out I was wrong about how the protector works, a comment above says it prevents screen damage from sunlight which I didn't even know was a thing.
I thought it worked the other way around by blocking blue light from the screen going into your eyes and thought "why not".
Now I will avoid any of these blue light blocking protectors.

      • it does, but for people using indoor, for outdoor the sun light would much stronger than the phone display.

        • "but for people using indoor, for outdoor the sun light would much stronger than the phone display."

Yeah I dunno cause with my protector when indoors the screen looks completely normal (not blue light reduced, not darker at all).
When I go outdoors under even the slightest sunlight even on a cloudy day, the entire screen gets a tint of blue and becomes hard to see. I turn up brightness all the way and it's still harder to see in sunlight because of the blue, but with the protector off the screen was still easily visible under sunlight at max brightness.

          Anyhow. Blue protector bad.

    Snakeoil salesman something something…

The blue light filter is now inbuilt into the system itself.
Just need to toggle it on

    • "Snakeoil salesman something something…"

Yeah that's true. Being a dumb consumer I just saw it was slightly costlier than the normal clear tempered glass protectors for other phone models, so I automatically thought it would be better than normal tempered glass. With normal clear for my phone model also being sold out I guess I was fooled by the snakeoil.
I was wrong. Blue blocking is crap.

This is the kind of personal growth I love to see!

  • Don’t be fooled with Daiso, it’s just an upmarket Reject shop. Most of there products come from China.

If it works by containing a layer that reflects blue light, I think it would make sense that it reflects blue light both ways - from the phone back into the screen and from the outside back to your eyes. Given they can't just put a coating to go one way as it's transparent and light would need to pass through/hit from both sides.
