Inexpensive(ish) Gaming Capable Laptops with 16:10 Screens?

Looking for suggestions of laptop models to check out.

I'm planning an extended trip overseas, and would like to take reasonably capable computer with me; my desktop has a GTX1070, a Ryzen 3700X, and 32GB RAM. Games are the most intensive thing I currently use it for, but I do need the RAM in order to do everything at the same time, as is my habit. I am capable of swapping out RAM and storage drives.

I'm not too fussy about the resolution, but a 16:10 ratio is a must-have because 16:9 sucks and (if things work out) it's going to be my primary machine for several months.

Much as I'd like to spend as little as possible, I realise the cost will likely be a couple of grand, though I'm hoping to snag a deal on Boxing Day. While I haven't locked anything in yet (need to sort some stuff out first), I'm intending my first destination to be Europe, so buying over there is an option if there's reason to.

Other notes would be that I run Linux (Arch, to be precise), I have pencilled early March in for my departure, and, obviously, if the warranty isn't international it won't be doing me much good.

"I'm not too fussy about the resolution, but a 16:10 ratio is a must-have"

    Ok then.

    • Mentally change that to "pixel density", if you must. Or you could get into a technical debate about how resolution is completely different to the number of pixels in the display, if you can find someone who can be arsed.

I have a Legion 7i that has a 2560x1600 resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate. The colours and blacks are top notch for a laptop (excluding OLED screens).

The Legion 5 Pro has the same screen and has been on sale for as low as ~$2200 with a Nvidia 3070 Mobile. Perfectly capable for gaming.

    • Got the 7i as well. Best Laptop screen I've ever seen.

  • Be careful about buying in Europe. They have different keyboard layouts. French use "AZERTY" and Germans have "QWERTZ" layouts. Even the UK layout is different, with keys like @ " $ \ and £ being in different locations than you'd find on a US/AU keyboard.

    • Yeah, I'm aware. It's certainly not preferred, but there are ways to handle it, and if a deal were good enough… it is the OzBargain Way =P .

  • Highly recommend Legion 5 Pro (Display : 16.0" WQXGA (2560x1600)), I got mine back in March/April 2022.

I got it for ~$2000 with $200 cashback = ~$1800. Definitely look out for similar deals.

Buy in Australia and claim GST back when you go overseas.

Make sure you read up on the requirements, e.g. at least $300, retailer's ABN, within 60 days of departure etc.

    • If I buy on BD the timing probably won't line up (i.e. at least better than 10% discount), but if I end up buying later it's something I'll definitely get onto. I suppose the ideal for that is to get something with a cashback offer so that it's cheaper while still officially having the higher price (and therefore GST to be refunded).
