10-Port (or Slightly More) Gigabit Switch with PoE Recommendations

I'm planning on running some ethernet through the house to give my mesh router setup (TP-Link Deco M5) a wired backhaul. I currently have the NETGEAR GS308P — 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch with 4-Port PoE which connects to my router and multiple devices in and around my TV unit and every port is used up. I use the PoE ports to power a couple of devices. Because the M5 only has 2 ports I'll have to daisy chain to a second network switch in the attic, though if I one day buy a new router with more ports I can probably just connect it to that. This will then connect to a couple of rooms where I have my other mesh routers. I may also use the other ports for other stuff in the future like IP cameras, so PoE is good to have.

Because I don't have any ports left to connect to the second network switch I'm thinking of moving the current switch to the attic (which should work well having 4 PoE ports) and buying a new switch for the TV unit.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a 10 or 12 port gigabit switch which at least a couple PoE ports I can use for my TV unit? I think unmanaged should be fine and budget is about $200 but cheaper is better. Something like this looks good TP-Link TL-SG1210P but just wanted opinions from others first. Also would prefer a small compact form.

Or should I just buy another NETGEAR GS308P or equivalent 8-Port switch and disconnect a device from the first switch so I can fit on the second switch? I have a couple devices I don't really use much so if I really want I can actually fit it on, but would be nice to have a couple ports free for the future just in case.

Also if I should be doing anything different let me know. I'm a bit of a rookie with this stuff but know enough to get by and very open to suggestions.

  • What devices are you powering and work out your budget + some overhead. TP Link is generous at 63W but if you had 8 connected PTZ cameras it would be pushing the envelope when they all start up.
NETGEAR GS308P is only 53W max
    I have a managed https://www.computeralliance.com.au/5-port-ubiquiti-usw-flex…
nothing but a pain. Doesn't restart sometimes on updates and drops POE on ports every now and then.

    • Honestly the IP camera stuff was just a thought I had but is probably ages away if ever. I'm happy to ignore the PoE requirement for the attic switch and get a new switch in the future when I know my requirements.

Maybe I should just disconnect something from the first switch and then daisy chain it to the second switch, and for the second switch maybe just get a cheap 5 Port gigabit switch. Any suggestions?

I'll rather something unmanaged and painless though, don't care about this stuff that much just want it to work

  • After giving this more thought I'm thinking I'll keep this simple. I'll buy a couple of the TP-Link Litewave 5-Port Gigabit Switches https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/738664
and add one to my TV unit to expand that by a few more ports and another for the attic to run to the mesh routers. So the new TP Link switches will be connected to the Netgear switch as 2 separate daisy chains and I can upgrade the attic switch in the future if I need to.

Are there any major problems with this approach? Any recommendations for other switches? Seems cheap and easy

    • Should work great, and likely cheaper than any other option not to mention the additional flexibility you'll have.

Only restriction will be keeping your current PoE devices on your existing switch, but if you do add more later then you can deal with it then (figuring out what'll go where, how many PoE switches you'll need etc).

      • Great thanks for the feedback, looks like I'll go with this approach.

With the PoE it's only the one device and it has pretty low power needs (raspi) so I'm not too worried if I need to connect another device in the future. And like you said when my requirements change I can change the switch. All up these switches will only cost me about $50 so no biggie.
