Laphroaig 15 Y/O $99.95. Laphroaig 25 Y/O Cast Strength - $299 - Nick's Wine Merchants

100

I was almost tempted not to post this deal as I imagine that it will only appeal to a minority - but I was so excited to order these two, so I decided to post it anyway.

Before you read on … PLEASE DO NOT COMPARE THIS TO GLEN MORAY.

These 2 scotches are currently on sale…

the 15 y/o is hard to come by - it seems to have been replaced by the 18 y/o (also a great dram)
- when it was around a few years ago it usually went for $135-180

the 25 y/o cask strength - I would never normally consider spending this much on a scotch - but how often in my life would I consider buying a 25 y/o laphroaig?? This sale (normally 450ish - 600) makes it almost affordable for me.

These are classic islay malts - in simple terms they are very smokey.
If you wanted an islay to start (ie cheaper and gentler) on I would recommend lagavulin 16 y/o.

I hope this post helps someone.
I will try and track down a few reviews…

ALSO - free delivery to most places in Australia if your order is >$200

  • how does the 15 y/o compare to the 10 y/o?

  • As a comparison, the 15y/o is around about what I paid for a bottle about 5-6 years ago duty-free :)

It's quite good, but as the OP said… very smokey (probably a little too much for me)

  • +1

From memory the 15yr is a bit smoother than the 10, more subtle and restrained, but still Laphroig.
As the OP points out these are not being released currently it having been replaced by the 18

    On Islays in general:
(Lagavulin is less medicinal but still very smokey and not for the faint hearted - for a lighter Islay I recommend Caol Ila)

  • The cask strength is packed full of flavour.
    My usual rule of
    1 Glass
    2 fingers (of scotch)
    3 cubes
    4 mins
    5 sips
    repeat

    turned into 6-7mins & about 10 sips.
But smell is unbelievable smokey peat goodness

So they spent 25 years taking the water out, and you spend 6 minutes pitting it back in, hmmmm.

      • There's nothing wrong with adding water, ice on the other hand… :\

Great to see some sophistication in the ol' Ozzy-B world …

Good find, it's just a shame that I'm not in a position to spend that much on alcohol for a while … well, I am spending about that much to fill my new port barrel, but 10L vs 750ml, in an economy of scale, i would be remiss to invest in a single malt at this juncture …

If you're in SA, you may want to try Howards Cellar door for a good drop of port
10$ / L if you take your own barrel
25$ / 2L if you grab it by the flaggon

  • No deal - I can get scotch for $52 for 2 on special at Liquorland.

    [/end joke]

      ha ha
i did not see that last line at 1st on my browser… almost blew my top :P

  • So - it's expensive grog?

  • The 15 is a bit more restrained than the 10. I prefer the quarter cask to this though. That said, good price indeed. Laphroaig makes some absolutely awesome old school stuff.
