Bookshelf Speakers or Soundbar Works Better with Samsung TV?

Hi Everyone,

I am in a quandary at the moment. I just purchased a 85" Qled Samsung TV and thinking about which speakers should I buy.

Should I get bookshelf speakers or a soundbar to go with the TV?

I can see Amazon has a special with Edifier speakers and the one I like the look of comes with a sub woofer:

What is your experience in soundbars and bookshelf speakers?

Which type do you recommend?

    How big is your room?

If for movies and TV mainly, I would probably go for something like this.

If you listen to music more, then the 2.1 from Edifier would be also a good option.

If 90% music, and some TV, then these would be your best option under $1000.

Soundbar any day of the week.

The cheaper ones (<$300) are pretty crap
if you hit the $450+ bracket one with dolby atmos (i have a Q600A and it goes well) then you'll be laughing.

The Edifier's sound great, but if you're watching movies i'd go down the soundbar atmos route.

  • I have a Samsung HW-Q950A for my LG tv in a closed room and will definitively recommend it any day. It comes with a subwoofer and 2 remote satellite rear speakers.

A friend have it with an 85 inch Samsung tv in an open living room and still it is very good.

The newer version Samsung HW-Q990B have been on sale for $1300; so may be worth waiting for a boxing day sale if you are ok to spent that kind of money.

Not a fan of soundbars because they look stupid, and people unconsciously overrate their sound quality because they're surprised that a decent sound comes out of a single skinny speaker.

I use an ancient Sony surround sound receiver/amplifier (with 3 bookshelf speakers & subwoofer), which cost $50 on gumtree, combined with a massive pair of even more ancient Pioneer floor speakers that cost $30 at Cash Converters.

The sound is far better than any subwoofer I've heard.

The floor speakers also look great because they're big enough to hold a large plant, so that my TV doesn't look horrible by itself in the middle of the living room.

    • With you

Just picked up a stonking Jensen 5.1 system with an onkyo amp for $500.

The sound from a soundbar is utterly embarrassing compared to a decent second hand amp/speaker set up .

And am also picking up an onkyo 5.1 system with a Yamaha amp next week (for man cave) for $350. Again, great sound

    • Your comment has inspired me. What are the search terms you use when looking for second hand systems? And how do you define what is a good purchase?

  • Thanks everyone, I ended up getting the Samsung HW-Q600B/XY Q-Series Soundbar 3.1.2ch True Dolby Atmos DTS Wireless Sub for $331.55 (with 17% off ebay plus voucher).
Currently going for $349 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234669591210. I appreciate your comments, hopefully it will go well.

    Cheers,

You don’t have to connect the sub, do you?

      • From looking at the manual, the subwoofer and soundbar require their own power. It appears that the subwoofer is paired to the soundbar.
