Recommend Me a Dual Purpose Ladder

Need to reach up about 4.5m to replace a D-shackle on my sun shade. While the $159 Bailey dual purpose a frame to straight ladder at Bunnings looks to be able to do the trick, I’m wondering is there a buy-it-once use it for life type of ladder that ozbargain recommends?

Not fussed on price.

Would like to also use it as an A frame to replace an old 1.8m a frame.

Weight not that big an issue.

Safety is a concern so that rules out the cheap telescopic ladders made of the finest Chinesium that seem to be flooding my targeted ad channels now.

4.5m? Might need to get a harness as well working at those heights :P

As for ladders, buy a brand name and buy it in aluminium if you don’t plan on doing any electrical work. We have aluminium ladders at work that are older than I am.

Don’t buy wood, fibreglass of plastic. These will all deteriorate in the weather if left out long enough, aluminium won’t.

Lastly, make sure they comply with AS 1892.

My recommendation would be to look at Bailey dual purpose ladders if price is not an issue.

Or, if you want to go all out, go their Punch-lock Pro series…

Tbh I did half consider just hiring a handyman. Have them clean out the gutters while they were at it (2 storey home)

That Bailey looks good and does tick my boxes hmm..

Yeah, it’s something you should consider… some people might scoff and I did up until about 12 months ago until I almost fell off a ladder getting onto the roof to get tennis balls back down.

I was in that whole “only pussies need a harness to get up a ladder” right up until that point where I had that close call with falling from about 4m up.

If the guys working on your house fall down, no problem, they are covered by Work Cover and you don’t need to rely on them to pay your mortgage and take care of your family if they get injured. You getting injured on the other hand…

My mums friend’s husband fell off a ladder coming down after doing the gutters (single storey home), had to be put into coma and just never woke up.

Dude was fit as hell for late 50’s. Unfortunately just fell the wrong way.

Yeah might ask around for quotes now that I think about it.

    Never trust ladders.

    They're always up to something.

    • like tripping molly meldrum up

Ladders seem to sell at a big discount second hand. I got a nice Bailey for $10 a few years ago, but certainly $60 or so for what is $150 new.

Check out the Little Giant range. They are a transformer ladder.

    • I saw Costco has an exclusive one for 378 but the closest ‘Australian’ one is closer to $600…

You'll need at least a metre longer than you think you need when looking at advertised lengths. You can't, or rather shouldn't, stand on the top two or three rungs so you lose usable length. A 4.4m ladder for example you'll probably be standing around the 3.6m mark at most and you don't want to be stretching to reach what you want to work on as that just increases risk significantly. To comfortably work on something 4.5m high you probably want at least a 5.5m ladder assuming you're average height.

    • Yeah 1.8m and yeah I’ve had wayyyyy too many ‘I could have died moments’ on ladder despite being under 35 HAHA

I’ve used a Bailey dual purpose at work. Solid, well built, Reasonably light weight.

Don’t get something cheap. I’m happy to use a cheap(er) ladder, but not for anything over about 1.5m.

  • I went a Bailey FS13644 in the end.

    Thanks team.
