Have Xbox One S and Thinking of Getting a Xbox Series S or X

My youngest has an Xbox One S, had a fair life but still chugging along. Have the odd disc game, but mostly play games from Gamepass Ultimate.
Eldest son just uses my PC for the odd game (Steam etc), but was thinking of rewarding him for working hard this year and getting him a new Xbox possibly.
Thinking initially a Series S and I guess then it had to be purely digital games then. Can you easily add storage to a Series S, just like on a One S? ie external HDD? Any limitations in this? Not sure if I can justify the $$$ difference between the 2 models.
On the current One S they have multiple profiles/gamer tags?? and I'm led to believe only one profile requires gamepass ultimate, and both profiles can access ultimate? Is this correct? If so would it be possible to get ultimate on the new Series S/X leveraging the existing ultimate on the One S or does it have to be on the same console?
If it is not hard enough to follow with Microsoft's naming conventions :(

Yes, it's easy to add storage albeit expensive proprietary storage. You can add external HDD but can only run X1 games from it. Series games must run off the high speed internal drive or proprietary expansion. They can be stored on external HDD but must me moved to high speed drive to play. It's double the storage from the Series S to X.

    • Thanks mate, always a catch, but I understand limits of generic storage.

My understanding below, but happy to be corrected.
We are one week into using an S, the XB1 is still hooked up for the few disc games we have.
We unplugged our 2TB external HDD from XB1 and plugged into the S. Games are recognised, but if it is a game that has an X/S optimised version it won't play the existing version (unless offline, but no good for say horizon 5). It will prompt you to upgrade, which replaces existing.
Per @juiciness above, X/S games play from internal drive only, but can be shifted back and forth from the external HDD to free up internal space.
One GPU account needed per box. The XB1 is my 'home' box, the S is my son's. We already have GPU subscription each (maintained by MS Rewards point). You can only change your 'home' box five times per year, so I'm trying to avoid that.

If you are both playing in the same house, you only need one Gamepass subscription. Once you set it up, you don’t need to be swapping the “home” console at all.

How I have it set up at my place is, my daughters Xbox is the “home” Xbox. She can get on and play whatever game she wants and has access to Gamepass through my account. My Xbox is set up as the secondary Xbox, and only has my account signed in. As soon as I sign in, all my account is there and I have access to Gamepass and online play from the slaved Xbox.

Whoever only plays on the one console should have the secondary account and their console should be set up as the “home”. The person who plays on both consoles should be the account owner and their main console should be the slave unit.

      • pegaxs, this sounds good as similar situation wanting here. Why does the person that only plays on one console should be setup as the home? Does it make any difference as long as 1 acct has GPU ?

          Person 1 - has GPU
          Person 2 - no GPU

Person 1 mainly uses Xbox A
Person 2 mainly uses Xbox B

Log into Xbox B as Person 1 as set the Home Xbox option
Person 2 can now log in to Xbox B and enjoy Xbox Live Gold, Person 1's games, & Person 1's games from GPU (and doesn't need Person 1 to log in)

Person 1 can log into Xbox A and play games with Person 2 on Xbox B

          • @ShortyX: Thanks for the detailed explanation.

    • Hmm so I have a 2TB on the One S, I can grab it off it and plus into a series X/S and it will play one S games off it? Nothing to do, just works? Understand putting series x/s games onto this will not play.

One GPU acct per console? Someone below mentions otherwise ?

Must look into MS rewards points… so u can get enough to pay for GPU ?

      • Must look into MS rewards points… so u can get enough to pay for GPU ?

        From https://www.cbr.com/xbox-game-pass-free-microsoft-rewards/

Earning enough Microsoft Rewards Points to cover a Game Pass Ultimate subscription is most viable for players with a healthy amount of free time on their hands. It can become a game in its own right. Unfortunately, it's too much like a feedback loop of playing Game Pass so that you continue to subscribe to Game Pass to recommend to anyone else.

If your gaming time is less of a daily habit and more of a luxury, focusing on Game Pass Quests won't leave you with much time to get the most out of the games you want to play. As tantalizing as "free" Game Pass Ultimate might look on paper, it's probably best for most players to pay for Game Pass with money and not time.

Another option is to pay $130-$140 for 3 years of GPU.

        • Yeah dont game enough and certainly dont have the time to set aside to do this regulary

While you can add storage to the Xbox One Series S, the price is pretty exorbitant.

Any Series game can only be played on the internal storage, or the proprietary expansion card, which costs the price difference between the Series S and Series X, at $349 for 1TB. There is a 512GB option, but I can't find it listed on any retailer's websites.

You can only play older, non Series games from a regular external hdd.

    • Ouch they have to get u somewhere! Maybe a Series X may be more benefical im thinking then……

Unless you urgently need it now, or super cash strapped, get the X. The included internal storage of the S is paltry (~364GB), and Microsoft uses expensive proprietary storage, which hasn't dropped in price anywhere near as much as standard PCIE 4.0 NVME SSDs. Adding 1TB is almost as much as the Series S itself. IMO, pony up for the X and get the better performance along with option for cheaper physical games.

    • yeah man starting to think that now……

      • And Just realised I have the Amex deal, spend $500 or more and get $150 back at M$, looks like you cant buy the console by itself online though? You need to bundle with accessories which is mostly defeating the purpose then for me…..
