How does one get into shooting? I’d like to get into pistol shooting and I’m in Sydney.

      • +1

Alternatively, you can go to one of the many community clubs, which generally provide better coaching and overall atmosphere from the numerous people who have transitioned from SSAA to community clubs.

Depending on where you are, there are numerous ranges across Sydney. Send me a PM, I'd be happy to help

    • +5

Cat H (pistol) is possible there are a few ranges around that can cater for it (St Ives, St Marys) but it is expensive,

if new to shooting I recommend getting just a standard long arms license (Cat A+B) and a 22LR bolt action rifle,

    • +2

Would recommend starting with long arm licence (much easier and straigtforward to get and will teach you good safe skills and techniques). St marys have a shoot-to-try day where you pay like $90 and experience firing different types of firearms with a safty instructor (cheap way to see if it is the hobby for you).

Best to reach out to a range. St Marys indoor range is the biggest in Sydney and will can point you in the right direction. You need to attend a course, join the SSAA to satisfy part of the application and wait super long to get your licence from the police.

Cat H is alot more stringent (for good reason) and you need to attend weekly shoots, have a proper logbook, be vouched by existing members and other stuff. It is also alot more restrictive to own and their are more rules and regulations regarding safe storage.

      • you have to shoot a pistol weekly???

thats great if you live near a range

also how many rounds have to be expended to pass as a 'shoot'

sounds expensive given 9mm is what? 75c per?

        • +2

I understood it was 8 range meets per year needed?

and you can shoot 22LR pistol, that is less than 10c per round,

        • +1

Maybe not weekly, but there are certain min number of regular shoots you have to do do get your probationary licence.

Not the cheapest hobby for OzBargainers lol.

    • How does one get into shooting?

With lots of patience lol, my son has been waiting 9 months so far for his Cat A+B licence.

    • -1

idonteven - Join a Pistol Australia affiliated club and do it properly. Would not go anywhere near a SSAA club.

      • +2

        Please elaborate

    • What about getting into shooting in Melbourne? I'm assuming different rules here compared to NSW?

How does one get into shooting? I’d like to get into pistol shooting and I’m in Sydney.

The wowsers have decided that you can't. Because THEY are afraid of things, THEY have decided that YOU can't have them. This pretty much sums up most policy positions of left-wing politics.
      😁

      • +2

I'm just glad THEY haven't outlawed ill-informed hyperbole!

      • Nice username.

It's amazing to me that anyone can look at Australia vs countries where guns are more common and think it's a bad thing that idiots/maniacs can't buy military grade weaponry.

        • Even in America citizens cannot buy fully automatic weapons or weapons with underbarrel 40mm grenade launchers. Which is unconstitution. The 2nd amendment says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. That mans anyone should be able to purchase any weapon they like.

        • It's amazing to me that…

Amazing you is not a justification for imposing new laws…

          think it's a bad thing that idiots/maniacs

Well legally they can't even in the US. Firstly anyone with a diagnosed mental health disorder is prohibited from buying firearms, just like in Australia.

          can't buy military grade weaponry.

Secondly, what is your definition is 'military grade'? This term gets thrown around by the media arts school grads who have no idea about firearms and it really makes them look ignorant. Automatic weapons, which one might associate with the military are also already prohibited.

So your point that mentally deficient individuals being able to buy automatic weapons is not even a thing, even in the most 2A friendly states in the US.
You just didn't know this fact because your sources of information are deliberately deceiving you for political gain. Think about changing those if you want a better grasp on reality.

          • -3

@1st-Amendment: Chill out gun nut. Please don't go postal

            • @sator:

              Chill out gun nut

That's the cognitive dissonance kicking in. It's entirely expected…

  • +1

also just saw the Blue (Teal) ones here for a few bucks more, https://www.amazon.com.au/Howard-Leight-Amplification-Electr…

  • Fantastic! Thanks very much for sharing this.
    Grabbed one straight away.
Some others at the range have them and they are so good to have, but cost has held me back.

Also very handy for when I'm using the chainsaw, mowing etc..

    Much appreciated!

  • +3

For a second I thought this was a pair of wireless headphones..

    • Do these have spatial audio?

      • +5

Designed for use at the range or in the field, this earmuff also features low profile earcups that won't interfere with when aiming. The headband is padded for comfort, and telescopes to ensure a secure, custom fit. An external audio jack lets the earmuff do double duty as stereo headphones when connected to an MP3 player or other audio source.

Got one for when I make sexy time with the wife. She's a screamer

    • +3

I thought you meant you got it so you dont have to hear your wife scream when she does it with another man…

  • The cheaper ProCase pair I tried were too small to cover both my ears. Are these gonna fit my big melon?

    • +1

I have a big head and they work fine for me,

    • Yep

    • +1

They JUST cover my big ears. But are rather uncomfortable when paired with glasses.

  • +2

Thanks OP, picked up another set as spares to throw in the range bag.

  • +1

I get FREE shipping and I don't even have prime. I think it's free atm. Bought a watch today and was free shipping too (from Amazon US)

    • +5

iirc free shipping over $39 at amazon au and $49 for amazon US and UK

  • +1

Perfect. What I need for home.

  • Thank you, bought one.

  • You maddog… Been looking for ages for a good electronic ear protection for when I go to the range. Could not justify paying Australian prices. Got 2 now.

  • +3

Coincidentally I purchased myself a pair just a few minutes before deal was posted as well hahah.

Counterfeits are apparently a bit of a concern with them out there though (even on amazon) which is something to keep in mind! but there are differences you can look out for, and it should be easy enough to return/refund it to Amazon if they turn out bad.

New to the sport and just waiting on my licence at the moment; if fake, it’s an easy refund, if not, great deal, and if I ever want to upgrade to something better, is still great to have around to lend to a friend :)

    • +1

To update: just received today in post, pair are indeed genuine

      • I haven't checked mine. Thanks for the reminder

  • These are OK, not quite peltor levels of protection. Still recommend double hearing pro

  • +9

These are the worst headphones I've ever owned. Good noise cancellation though.

  • Great. We needed two pairs to replace or aging electronic ear muffs. They had been discontinued and couldn't get pads anymore.

  • +2

These are not good (recommended) for loud constant noise power tools, lawn mowers, heavy machinery and concerts etc

Only short duration, impulse, intermittent, impact sport and impact machine noises.

    • +4

Agreed. They seem like a good idea for being able to talk to people while using the lawn mower or whatever but they're not actually good for that, they will play the noise of the machine (quietly) through the speakers.

Also the 3.5mm input is pretty bad. Wear a pair of earbuds underneath a set of $16 earpro from Bunnings.

Source, I own the Impact Sports, Impact Pros, and the $16 high vis green earpro from Bunnings.

    • How come they are not good for loud constant noise but ok for short duration?

      • +1

        They get tired

      • +2

They're designed for impact. As soon as it hears a loud sound it cuts out. But if the sound is constant it doesn't really work how it is designed to.

@coxymla has the right idea. Buds plus muffs will work better. So buds with these will be ok if you just turn them off. They'll just work like passive muffs. But not the thickest muffs around..

  • +2

Don’t even know why I bought one

Just to look like a bad as$

    • +1

I don't shoot either but they look very bad as$ and I am tempted by that already, haha.

  • +1

Got ADHD or just easily distracted?

Airpods pro underneath these with music or white noise playing. You'll never hear co-workers again

    • These amplify voice

  • Would it be better than a Bose QC35 pair for lawnmower noise?

    • +1

No, but earbuds under passive earpro will be better than cans, even if they have ANC. See my post above.

      • Thanks! Always thought the QC35 fully covering the ear would be better for lawnmowers. I’ll try the AirPod Pro the next time then.

        • I've got both and just had a thought, AirPods pro on noise cancellation underneath QC35 for double noise cancellation?
          I wonder if this works?

          • @JTTheMan: That’s interesting! I will try it soon and see if it’s even better.

  • +1

The protection comes from instant blocking of any noise above 82 dB.

    • +1

NRR 22 is the important information. The efficacy rating is NRR 22.
Meaning the muffs will only protect you by that much.

I still use buds under these type of muffs for loud impact to properly help prevent damaging my ears and I can still hear conversation with the buds in.

The key is to work out how loud the intended impact will be and then reducing that to a safe level through PPE..

Where have all the gun hating ozbargain commentors gone?

Where are all the gun owning heros when theres a gun shootout they didnt cause ?

We have hundreds of gun shoot outs in america for example, but the heroes 99% are never to be seen…

      • +2

        Lol there it is

        • -1

So gun massacres where thousands of people die is funny is it ?

      • +1

We have hundreds of gun shoot outs in america for example…

Well firstly a 'shoot-out' implies that someone is shooting back, so I think you mean lone shooter attacks? A lot of these happen in liberal gun free zones where the criminals know they are unlikely to meet resistance. However when they do encounter resistance, it never gets a chance to become a story.

but the heroes 99% are never to be seen…

It happens more than you think, it's just that it doesn't make a big of a story since the potential disaster is quashed immediately.

Don't: Allow hair to obstruct the ear or the earmuff's secure fit in any way

But sunglasses shown in the photo are okay?

lol, looks like the usual disconnect between Engineering and Marketing

  • Where do you guys buy your guns from these days?

    • +3

Given that this is ozbargain, has to be Cleaver's.

      • +1 - I’m lucky enough to live a 5 min drive from him.

      • We try to buy them @ Cleaver's, but they're always OOS.

    • I use these for motor sport and they're great. Also fantastic when using noisy power tools like an angle grinder.

FYI: Price was $48.58 on the 6/12/22 according to CCC.

    • +1

      6/12/2018

      • Yep. My error, you are correct.

  • Cheers OP, grabbed a pair. Been needing something better than either dodgy earplugs, or nothing, so this sould work well.

(Got a $3.03 coupon automatically applied in cart when i ordered, as I also got the glasses and case as suggested below in the "buy it with" section).

    • I believe that is the buy 2 save 6% offer.

  • Can anyone explain this overall negative amazon review?:
"…However, what I really dislike about these is that they don't cut out large calibre gunfire well. I was at the range and anyone near me ( 20 metres away) who was firing 308 or larger was really really painful. Basically these don't cut out enough of the explosion from firearms. I ended up using earplugs as well as these. This really defeats the purpose. You're better off buying a cheaper set of non-electronic earmuffs in my opinion."

    • I fired a .50 cal recently, let me tell you, these kinds of things don't cut it!

    • +2

On their own the Impact Sports only have a (as mentioned by a few other commenters) noise reduction rating of 22db , compared to 23 on also popular Walker Razors, 30 on the (far bulkier) Impact Pros, and ~32 on even just disposable earplugs.

However it’s generally very highly recommended to be doubling up on ear protection anyways with any set of earmuffs, as a second layer of protection and as a backup layer if/when you break the seal on your over-ears (more if you’re using rifles than pistols). What electronic hearing protection like these do is let you let you turn up the volume so you can hear everything else (excluding gunshots) at a normal volume, even with earplugs in and protecting your hearing as much as possible.

    • +1

Most range about 140-175 db. The muffs are NRR 22 db.

So you could still be around 155db. Chuck some ear plugs as well and reduce that by 32 db ish..

      123db still..

For 308 etc I'd try for the impact pro which offer NRR 30.

115db still.. which is in a live music/ rock concert range. But it's not for extended durations..

I still think they work well for rim-fire etc. And because they magnify sound also still work well for larger bore with ear plugs.

  • +1

    22 NRR (Noise reduction rating).

Same NRR as $6 ones from bunnings…
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/craftright-ear-muffs_p5820953

    • I can't see the speaker on those that lets you hear the noises around you.

Or the 3.5mm connection to let you listen to music etc.

  • +1

I've had these exact ones for years. Great quality,

    • +2

yes I am sure you want to live in a society where only the Police, Army and criminals are the only ones that have the means to defend themselves. what could possibly go wrong?

The 80-100million people who were murdered by their own country's Police and Army the past 100 years probably disagree with you.

      • -5

yes I am sure you want to live in a society where only the Police, Army

Yes because i trust the Police and Army far more than i trust some random person.

and criminals are the only ones that have the means to defend themselves. what could possibly go wrong?

Your claims are complete bullshit and do not work.. more guns means more crazies get a gun and bad things happen to innocent people.

The 80-100million people who were murdered by their own country's Police and Army the past 100 years probably disagree with you.

Wow you really believe the american gun hero bullshit…

i mean every time theres a gun masscare its amazing how you gun heros are never stop any masscares, no its always the police who end up being heroes.

        • i mean every time theres a gun masscare its amazing how you gun heros are never stop any masscares

          I’m not allowed too.

          • @vodamerc: Yep, under Australian laws we can't do anything really. Basically need to run away and wait for the police to come.
