  • sigh - I think I finally have to pull the trigger on a 14" MBP.

    • +3

It’s such a good deal especially when you combine it with the 15% off gift cards from last week! That’s what I did and managed to get the MBP 14 512gb for around $2.1k

      • which gift cards?

        • The deal is now expired but it was the 15% off Ultimate from Coles

      • +1

I'm hoping for something like this in April, so I can claim from traveling.

That would be perfect, 15% gift cards and 10% back ❤️❤️❤️

Maybe a price drop by then? No idea haha

      • +1

Couldn't be bothered trying my luck at local Coles/Woolworths (not a true ozbargainer I suppose)… bought $2k worth of "Super Swap" gift cards for Amazon via Shopback (2% cashback) and already had ~$400 of Amazon GCs in the holster anyway.

Can't wait to receive this thing!

  • Stack with 15% off on Him or Teen cards at coles

  • +1

lmao nice dp and thanks for sharing the deals!

  • +2

    Officeworks $1 cheaper

    • +2

Stack with 15% off on Celebration gift cards, even sweeter :)

should we wait 2nd gen macbook 14 which will come out Jan 23?

    • You won't notice the improved specs, for this price I would buy now.

      • Won't new M2 chip Pros go on sale anyways?

        • Don't think so.

    • I'm planning to hold till Jan, if there's no significant improvements, I'm hoping the M1s would be available at a similar if not more discount

  • +3

Officeworks price beat to 2420. Picked up one this morning.

  • +2

I've been hoping to find one slightly used, but people are freaking mad.

So many listed at this price on FB market 😂

  • +10

This is the nicest laptop i've ever had. Paid RRP and 0 regrets. I've always been PC over Mac, but these MBP are so reliable.

    • +7

The way I see it is, I buy a 1k portable PC laptop then build a $1,500 PC desktop for music.

Otherwise I buy something like this, which can basically do both.

      • +1

Typing from a 14 m1 pro, buy this instead. I've used a pc for decades and finally being able to do real work from anywhere on battery for longer than 30 min is a game changer. The fact that it doesn't drain in 2 seconds in standby is just hilarious. You also won't get the same colour accurate screen when fitting a laptop and pc in this same budget.

        • +1

To be honest, I don't need a portable laptop.

I just need something for study, it'll probably never leave my house.

It's alot to pay for a laptop 2.5+
          K+

          Ahh

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: No worries, it was a complete game changer for me at least, suddenly realising that I can do all my professional work anywhere I want, at a cafe, on the plane, it makes such a huge difference. Then again, all our needs will obviously be different.

If you price match @ Good Guys you can combine, the price match, 15% GC and Goodguys $70 storecash cashback, instore only.

  • Any chance we'll see sub $3k for the M1 Pro 14 inch 1tb like Officeworks had some months ago?

    • +1

      I will rather buy:
      - 14" mac 512gb
      - 2tb m.2 external ssd for $500ish.
You will get more for your buck and portability.

Has anyone used apple silicon with virtualization/docker applications? How has been your experience? Given these processors have been around for a while now most of the issues would have been resolved. Can't decide between this or intel Alder Lake machine.

    • +1

haven't had issues with docker for about 18 months now. that being said, i'm a pretty light user - just a few versions of postgres, redis and nginx

    • +1

I've been using Docker on my M1 Max MacBook Pro since last year — mainly for DDEV for web development, it's been fantastic. Very fast, haven't noticed any performance issues and it's constantly getting better, so the gap with Linux is definitely narrowing.

I recommend checking out Alexander Ziskind on Youtube, he's done quite a few tests on performance of Docker on M1 Macs:
      https://www.youtube.com/@AZisk/videos

My only regret is getting an M1 Max, I should've bought the M1 Pro instead to save a bit of money and get better battery life. I have not noticed any performance advantages with the Max chip.

  • This is pretty much the price apple were doing (with gift card discounts) isn't it? But it's just now in real money. Good win.

The top tier one is about $4,038 on the apple site currently, and $3,438

  • The more I look at this deal the better it sounds.

Part of me wants to wait till the 23 M2 MBP14 comes out, I am also travelling overseas in June as well, so that extra 10% TRS refund would be a good bonus.

But even with the TRS refund, its still not quite a good deal as this.

    • Factor in is the usage up to June worth it for you too, pretty great deal on this one

      • I also do want to upgrade mine to a 32gb of ram as well though. So hopefully they come out standard with 32gb next year

        • +3

Knowing how incredibly stingy Apple are, I doubt that 32GB of RAM will be standard on any Pro machines for years to come. I'm still astounded that they did 16GB RAM as standard for the base 2021 MBPs to be honest.

I also doubt that the M2 MBPs will be much faster than the M1 series, it'll be a minor improvement at best, but I bet the price will go up significantly so the value will be terrible.

          • +1

@deadpoet: True. Because these machines are already so fast we will likely not see any improvement in m2 apart from graphics.

    • @colt75 do they ever check if u bring the item back after the TRS claim? Because is >$900. I just bought an iphone recently and am thinking to claim TRS.

      • Never for me, but i hear its very rare if they do But eitherway, when it comes back in, it is is considered a used item so tax value is less than what you left with.

      • Okay i read up on TRS here: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…

When i return to Australia with the laptop will i need to pay back the gst refund?

      • +1

I travelled overseas in November with my partners family and 4 of us claimed TRS on some items and on the way back we just exchanged it so the other person would be carrying it back instead of ourselves. Upon arrival we didn’t get checked or asked anything.

    • +2

I went overseas on October and just came back last month. Can confirm that they do look for TRS refunded items. The airport is not as busy as it should be so they have plenty of time to check everyone (my brother works in the airport).
Also since TRS staffs are custom officers so they have all information cross checked.

      • I argued with multiple people about this, but I'm travelling with a friend who is flying back to Canberra and I could possibly give him the laptop to mail back to me 😂

        • +1

they don't care about who bring the item out of the country, as long as the item was purchased in Australia and someone claims TRS on it, that item needed to be counted in that $900 allowance.
I mean your plan may still work, but this is what their website says.

      • @trantonz really curious as to how they find out? any insider insights from your bro?

        • +1

They probably find out because it is border force who approve the trs refund. And it’s border force who meet you when you arrive

        • +1

they even check if I buy anything overseas that are worth more than $900 btw

          • @trantonz: So if i claim an item that cost >900 Aud, then return back to Australia with it, I will have to pay back the TRS?

            • @shegeloaf: yep. (in theory)

You could pool your allowances together though if travelling with others.

            • @shegeloaf: it's tax free if total value < $900. If > $900 then the every penny would be taxed.
If you travel with 2 other person and if they don't claim any TRS then when you come back, you all can pool the allowances which should be $900 x 3.

            • @shegeloaf: Not all of it. since its no longer worth what you brought it out at.

              • @colt75: No the terms say that they do not consider depreciation. They judge by the original docket price.

  • I went to Office Works a week ago and noticed that they had the wrong price tag on 14 Pro laptop. The price was listed as $1897, but the staff claimed that this price was only for the 250GB version, not the 512GB version that I was interested in purchasing. I tried to argue with them and even took a picture as evidence, but they refused to honor the price. I called Office Works and sent an email, but never heard back from them. Does anyone know how I can get them to honor the price that was advertised? I don't really need a new laptop, but at that price I would be interested in upgrading.

    • +6

But there isnt a 256gb version?

      • that's what I was telling them, I think they didn't know 13 pro and 14 pro are different laptops. The reason there was a mistake on the price in the first place.

    • +4

You can’t. They don’t legally have to. See all the past price mistake deals posted her.

  • I want 32gb of ram in the 16 inch model!

  • Had the buyer remorse from buying the 14", shoulda bought the 16 instead after many years of using the 27" iMac.

    • +2

Maybe we should do a swap. I’m thinking the 16 inches to big!

      • Yep the 16" is definitely too big and heavy for commuting. It's great for a desktop replacement, but not for taking on the road with you.

  • The 14" taken off officeworks site.

  • Is the best way to get one of these cheaper basically by waiting for a sale then having 15% off gift cards and also price matching let's say Officeworks?

    • Seems like it. Apple used to offer iTunes discount which could be used to purchase hardware products at a discount, as that is no longer on offer, this seems to be the way to go.

  • Do excuse for the seemingly stupid question " How exactly is this better than M2 Air ? "
Air has better battery , almost similar screen size and is much lighter ( both on arms and on wallet).

    • +5

This has a better screen, a better CPU, more ram, better speakers.

M2 Air is a touch smaller and lighter.

You can find many comparisons on YouTube.

  • Wouldn't have given this deal a second thought if it wasn't for the incompatibility with so many apps/os on 32bit architecture :(

  • How is the Razer Blade 14 spec compare to the apple M1 pro?

    • +1

M1 Pro is the faster CPU and considerably better on battery life. Better screen on the Mac too. The Razer Blade will smash it on the GPU front though (Assuming RTX3060+ GPU).

All comes down to what you need more.

      • The razer 14 cost $4699 in jb, so this must be overprice compare to the spec offered by mac with similar price.

        • +1

That does seem high, though it depends on the rest of the spec (SSD and RAM size mostly).

You will pay a premium for the GPU though, depending again on which model it comes with.

The Razer is a very well specced gaming device. If you're not using it for games though, the Mac is the better choice in my opinion.

        • +1

they're pretty similar at RRP but razer discounts far more aggressively. I paid ~2240 for the 5900HX/3070 Blade but wouldn't consider it for work

    • +2

Rather than comparing specs, you're probably better off comparing use case.

As someone who has both a Blade (15 though) and a MBP 14" M1 pro, it's the latter which I find myself using 99% of the time. Main reason is I get pretty good performance in nearly everything I do other than gaming, but I get significantly better battery life (5+ hours vs <1 hour). Downside is obviously compatibility in the ecosystem but for the most part, the games I want to play work fine on MBP through either Rosetta or Parallels.

  • Does anyone know if Apple will match this pricing in their own retail stores? Might give me an excuse to use up some gift cards I am sitting on.

    • +1

They’ll match up to 10% of the price difference

      • Stingy apple

  • Still too pricey to be called a bargain for a luxury item imho

  • I'd buy this if it wasn't for them having the Touch Bar. Better to wait until.

    • +1

This doesn't have a touch bar?

      • I thought the new MBPs did?

        • Nah they removed it from the "new" Macbook Pros (14/16") in 2021. It's still available on the 13" though which even in M2 form this year, is the same as the previous M1 and Intel generation MBPs (which included the revised touchbar).
