Recommend Me a Storage Shelf

Hey all

Hoping someone has some experience with any of these shelves and can recommend something cheap and sturdy

It's for the garage
Nothing too heavy on it but would be good to know it's not going to break
Most important thing is ease of putting it together and price

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated;

  • The Bunnings one has been good, no bowing out and price reasonable

  • Shame this deal ended: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/716200 - I bought 3 of these and they fit nicely down the length of the garage wall and they are really tall and very solid. It may be worth waiting to see if these go on offer again, but I guess that depends on your situation and space etc

If it helps, I also have a couple similar to the bunnings ones (from your link) in my shed and they are alright but any dampness and the boards tend to sag, and they are quite wobbly too

  • +1

Much of a muchness from what I can see. They’ll all do the job Ok, but one thing to consider is that the MDF shelves aren’t great if they get wet. They typically last long enough if kept dry.

  • Thanks everyone
Happy with somewhat durable option as these won't get wet.
Additionally, won't be putting too much weight on it anyway

    Thanks!

  • I have the Bunnings one. It lives outside undercover but it does get some rain splash from Time to time during heavy rain or when it’s windy.

I’ve got stuff on it I don’t care about so if it breaks whatever. I do keep an eye on the shelving to make sure it’s not going to break.

So far so good (2 years, rainy Sydney 2 years). No damage to it (including the shelves). Was easy to put together

  • stratco have some shelves on sale at the moment, might save you a couple bucks

  • Have several from Bunnings in varying heights, widths and depths. All the knock together style and they've all held up very well. Don't overthink it. Unless you want specific accessories or to tie them into benches and cabinets pretty much any of them in the same style will do the job.

    Thanks all
Will check Stratco ones out now!

    Cheers

  • mdf shelves will warp eventually. Will be good for a few years. Get the cheap ones with metal shelves if you want them to last. Heaps of new sellers on gumtree.

    • When's eventually? I've got ones that are 17 years old and are fine.

      • My bunnings ones that were around $80 each, at a guess 3 or so years. The shelves with light/mid weight stuff (well below their rated load) had massive sag. A top shelf with nothing had small sag also. Didn't get wet. Replaced them with metal shelving for around double the cost. The quality difference is obvious. They hold heavy weight without issue.

        • Must just be that particular brand. Most of the knock together style ones the shelves are supported along all 4 sides and usually a cross beam in the middle as well making it virtually impossible for them to sag.

          • @apsilon: Only edge support for mine. Could be poor design that they have phased out, as on bunnings the larger ones all show additional supports.

  • Avoid mdf shelves. You'll want metal racks like these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/700606

    • Agreed. We had some water issues in our little shed, and i had to junk the shelves because they got super mouldy

  • I used these steel racks in my garage and they have lasted well https://falconshelving.com.au/collections/heavy-duty-longspa…
