Canopy Rangehood Installation Cost

got 2 quotes to replace my existing canopy rangehood and replace ducting, $1400 and $1700. wtf? why does it cost so much? i don't need a new hole in the wall, just need to hang the rangehood and replace a very short duct.

what are other people's cost for replace canopy rangehood + replace duct? no cabinet works, hole on the wall already exist.

  • What is the access for the ducting like?

How far back does the ducting extend?

  • Why are you replacing the ducting?

Paid close to 1500 about 5 years ago and that included ripping down two built in cupboards, pissing off the old recirculator rangehood, installing our delonghi rangehood, duct it up to the roof, add a vent bit at top. Was about 3 hours or so, two guys.

    Was a cash job too.

And where does this very short duct currently exhaust to? That may answer your question.

Or you could ask either of the 2 peeps who provided you a quote since, you know, they exchange services for currency and will likely want to answer your questions and confirm the scope of works to obtain your said currency.

    • hole on the wall already exist.

      • Yes, got that, there's a hole. Where does the hole and ducting lead? My bet - roof cavity, as was common practice decades ago. Thus the price of the quotes.

        • Emm… if it ends up in roof cavity , won't it be ceiling hole instead ?

You're asking where does the hole on the wall lead to ?
Well , you can punch your perimeter wall , put your head through and let me know what you see.

@dcep: Guess the point I'm trying to lead you towards is a big whoosh for you. Depending where OP lives, it's no longer legal to vent exhausts, let alone a rangehood, into the ceiling cavity without following specific regs. In those other states most won't install venting into a ceiling regardless.

The quote probably includes ducting and installation to vent externally.

The fact OP won't answer that question says it all really.

  • Try hipages / airtasker then?

    Try Bunnings.

Not the exact same situation but they were much cheaper than a local tradie when I needed a new hot water tank.

Assuming it has a plug, just DIY.

    Just it it yourself…

  • You'd need more details to know how expensive or time consuming the install is.

I'm currently installing a schweigen one myself, which has the extraction fan on the roof and duct work back to the unit through the ceiling.
To be honest it's nothing out of the realms of anyone somewhat diy handy. No way I would have paid $1k for install for even one as involved as this.

If you're just putting a rangehood on an existing wall any handyman could do it as it's probably only 3-5 wall anchors, a level, drill, some screws and maybe some duct tape.
Depends where the existing duct work goes as venting into ceiling cavity isn't the best idea.

why does it cost so much

If you don't have the skills to do it yourself how do you know it 'costs so much'

    • If you don't have the skills to do it yourself how do you know it 'costs so much'

Let's be generous $100/hr for some cut-throat handyman unskilled labor …

2 men 6 hours , or do you need 1 day / 8 hours for the laughs

      2 x $100/hr x 6 hrs = $1,200 + new duct + consumables + dispose old unit

It's on the news that even Airtasker costs a fortune these days

  • does that price include the rangehood unit?

    • obviously not.

      • Username and pic checks out.

  • I replaced my old one for free…..by replacing it myself

  • Don't you watch The Block?

Tradies are charging $4zillion per hour.

  • Who (which trade) did you get the quotes from? Who should be doing this sort of job?
