Rego Expired a Week or Two Ago - How Can I Check if I've Got a Fine on The Way?

Basically, my rego expired less than 10 days ago. Totally my fault, I've been swamped with work for the last month, and I literally just haven't checked my personal email because in the back of my head I figured "what's the most important thing that could come in…?". Well big mistake I guess, I paid it straight away. Unfortunately during this time I drove into TAFE Southbank from Kallangur (crossing Brisbane basically.

I figure I've almost certainly got a fine in the mail but how do I check if it's coming or even if it's already come? Last time that I missed a fine it went to SPER and that added a whole other layer of fees because they had sent the mail to my previous address (where the car was registered at) instead of my current address which my license showed. Surely there must be something online or someone I can call to check?

correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think speed camera or red light camera or safety camera or toll camera … picking up expired rego for that matter

police car camera scanner might flag it up on their screen but it won't issue fines automatically , the police officer will chase up to you and book you a ticket in-person

    • I looked it up and apparently there are specific cameras to catch unregistered vehicles. My thinking is that driving straight through brisbane including across the bridge that there would definitely be one of those cameras along the route.

Good to know. Didn't know they were so hi-tech since a decade ago.

You can check/pay for infringements on TMR online account.
Fingers crossed , nothing for you to pay.

If you have set up your TMR account (My account), you can check (My infringements) to see if your infringement has been processed onto our system and proceed to pay online even if you have lost your fine.

    • I read further into that ABC article I linked and found I was within 14 day grace period… Phew!!!

"When the cameras are in use, drivers will be given a grace period of 14 days after their registration is due before they can be issued fines."

RIP, I was incorrect. There is no grace period, perhaps they only included a 14 day grace period initially or perhaps ABC thought we would copy the standard practice of other states?

      • Maybe you weren't incorrect.

The police are saying you are unregistered and uninsured immediately your registration expires, and they can and will book you. But the automatic cameras may not be operated on the same basis. In most states fixed cameras are operated by another government department, which may have different policies. Fixed speed cameras are an example of this, they can and have in some states have had different enforcement margins to police-operated speed cameras.

That however doesn't change the fact that if you have an incident you aren't registered or insured, irrespective of whether a roadside camera would or wouldn't have booked you.

    • In Victoria all safety cameras will detect unregistered vehicles, and there's a 1 day grace period.

  • Why go off heresy, when you can go straight to the source !

      Why go off heresy

True… and risk excommunication from church of joh and flo…

  • It usually takes time to process fees.
If your rego was expired for 2-weeks, and you pay for it now, before they process it, there's a high probability that you will slip through the cracks. Especially with the troubles they're having (understaffed) things are apparently moving really slow across government departments.

Though I personally haven't gotten any fines in over +5 years, so I can't say I'm talking from recent experience. And yes, I also nearly missed my rego date since they only sent one reminder that was 3-days before due date, and to an email I don't use often. I checked and last year they sent me three; one was a month before, the next was a couple days before, and the other was with the renewal receipt on the due date.

    • I assume that the system is fully computerised and the only human interaction is required for verification of the automated number plate recognition. It's pretty easy for a computer program to look up a database to see if the vehicle was registered on the date of the photograph so I don't expect it to slip through the cracks.

It’s like being pregnant, you either are or you aren’t. No amount of checking is going to change the outcome.

If it turns up in the mail, you will know and you can just deal with it when it arrives.

If not, use it as a wake up call and put a date reminder in your phone’s calendar app a month out, a week out and then a day out from when rego is due.

  • I understand the sentiment of "just sit tight and wait" but my address changes often and I've had a history of not receiving their mail. A single fine can balloon out with fees for being late, for being handed to SPER, etc. I'll call the local police station and ask them after work, hopefully they'll know. I find it strange that it's a mail only thing though with no option to check if you have missed mail, especially when missing mail isn't a valid excuse.

    • Do QLD not have a way to log into your roads account to see correspondence/notifications etc.?

    • +1

I'll call the local police station

This may not work. If it was taken by a camera, you may need to see the state revenue office or your local traffic authority and ask them.

Another way to check might be through logging into your TMR account; (From the Qld Gov. fines information website)

If you have lost your infringement notice you can still pay by:

      • Logging into your TMR account (My account) and pay under My infringements
      • Calling us on 13 23 80 to obtain your payment reference number. We can only release the payment reference number by phone to the person who the fine was issued to.
    • Admitting guilt when you don't know if you have been caught doesn't sound like a very wise thing to do to me.

    • 2 fines.. not 1
