What's the cheapest way to travel to, from Sydney and Brisbane? I'm moving up there to study, but would like to commute back and forth now and then. All City Rail passes exclude Australian residents - Greyhound is an option, does anyone know of any promotions running at the moment?

Yes, if you are not rushed for time and home is near a train station on the Northern line or North Shore line, Newcastle is a viable option. The Newcastle commuter service is ridiculously cheap, and the bus station is next to the train station. But it will cost you a few hours.
