    Damn that's a good price.

Great little charger. Had one for many years.

    • -4

That's the problem. Old technology. Doesn't support lithium batteries

      • +2

How many real cars have lithium batteries?

        • +3

My motorbike does. Which this 5.0 is the ideal size for. As is my camping battery, which this would be ideal to keep topped up when not using often.

      • +1

not sure why your downvoted. you are 100% correct

  • +3

These are a really good charger and this is a really good price. I think I paid $130 from NRMA a few years ago

  • +2

Great price if anyone is in need of the charger. I have one and it's great charger.

    • +8

Thanks, can you send it over?

  • +2

    +1 great charger.

  • -1

    • +5

What’s the main uses for these if you don’t have a boat or go on long overseas trips?

Thinking of getting one but looking for use cases.

I have an EV so I’m guessing not much use for those as they auto charge their 12v battery?

    • they auto charge their 12v battery?

      Not necessarily.

    • When your starter battery dies, when you camping AGM needs to be charged, motorbike battery.

Its all 12V so if you don't have those or you battery is over 150-200A then this is not that useful, I find mine is a tad small very big battery banks.

  • +1

Great charger. I paid $180 four years ago.

Edit: that was the test and charge version, soz.

  • We have an old one but would have gotten this if we didn't have one.

Am looking for a jump start that doubles as a phone charger, on special

  • The Noco's are better in my experience.
Had a CTEK charger kill two batteries. They trip out after they detect "parasitic draw".
That's the whole point of a battery tender!

    • +1

I'd say the opposite, 2 dead nocos and no issues with the 3 cteks I've had

      • That's frustrating. The batteries the CTEK was killing were $600 a pop so I was pretty annoyed. The CTEK chargers have the parasitic draw trip programmed in though so it's an issue with the charger, not just that it's faulty. Annoying to have any charger fail though.

        • I use mine to charge a 120A AGM while its running a car fridge - wouldn't that draw according to your theory cause it to trip?

          • @hoxygt: How long are you leaving the charger connected with the fridge running? It was taking around 4-6 weeks to trip out. If you contact CTEK it's a known "feature" of the charger. Obviously not a problem for most users but the Noco one has been great (for me) since.

    • CTEK>NOCO

    • …Killed $1200 of batteries!!

"parasitic draw" can kill batteries & affect chargers. That's why this charger trips.

You didn't notice the charger had stopped charging after tripping? Indicating a fault with the connections, battery or circuit of the vehicle it is in.

I position the charger so I can see the charge indicators at least once a day. If it ever stops charging, I will know & intervene (with a multimeter, which would show any adverse "parasitic draw").

      • Yep, put the first one down to bad luck but the second one dug a little deeper.
Unfortunately the car it's connected to spends a lot of time in storage so there's no way I can keep an eye on it. The Noco has been running well for two years now.
I know it's an unpopular opinion to knock a CTEK but they mention it vaguely in a manual somewhere.

        • Thought yours may be left unattended, but best to check its working every so often. That applies to all chargers. Things can go wrong.

Best to search for the problem / get advice before spending $. There was a reason why it tripped - indicating investigation. If you observed it repeatedly stopped charging would have been a clue. Contacting CTEK might have helped.

Mine is connected to a rarely used old family car in storage. Starts first time. Positioned charger so it is visible when walk past. Becomes a habit to check. Only times in 3 years the charging indicators were out - had forgotten to reconnected the charger!

Good there's been no problems for 2 years. Noco has been positively commented on in these CTEK Deals. Different charges will suit different conditions.
Have found the CTEK manual a little lacking, but online search helped

@INFIDEL: Bought the 5amp Victron (with Bluetooth, that also does lithium) for roughly the same price, i think around $115?
I can literally sit in the loungeroom, connect to the charger two stories down in the basement and monitor the battery charge. Victron are next level. Records the amount of ah put back into the battery, in fact gives you the history of the charger and what it has charged since owning it. Absolutely brilliant.

            • @HappyPants: There are different uses which can be better suited to different chargers.

Never saw a reason for remote monitoring the charging - until the above issue of charger stopping charging. The Victron would have been handy.

So if the charging is done without easily being regular monitoring - a great idea.
And good to be able to get better monitoring of Ah input of charging as you say.

              • @INFIDEL: Yeah sorry, my message came across a bit aggressive….I didn't mean it to. Just a big big thumbs up for Victron is all I wanted to say, and NO, I am not associated with them in any way, and I am still actually quite uneducated about the world of 12v things!

                • +1

@HappyPants: I & others upvoted because it is good advice. Nothing wrong with being passionate about it!

Had read positive comments in other charger Deals where people loved the Victron because of the Bluetooth.
Just didn't see the need for it until your comment👍

When my CTECK goes to meet the other chargers in the tip… I'll consider buying a Victron.

  • +3

Bought @$89 with accessories 3 years ago. Really happy with it, after years of using basic chargers. Conditions battery in an old car I inherited.

    • What do you mean by conditions, thought it just charges

    • +1

I got mine 10 years ago around $90

still using the same charger over the years of 3 different cars … none requires battery replacement from the day of owning them till sold

  • Pretty sure I paid more than that when I bought mine (and thought I got a good price).
Bought it to condition the battery of an elderly neighbour who wasn't driving her car, but found that my cars benefited from the conditioning also.

    • +3

      Did the neighbour survive?

      • Touche. I think you know what I meant!
The car survived; my neighbour eventually sold it.

  • -1

    Will this work on Tesla?

    • Faulty bryans, does not compute.

    • +3

Yea. Takes 47 years to charge to 100%

  • ive just had to replace this. doesn't even charge lithium batteries so useless to me now

  • Can it charge a scooter?

    • +2

      If its 12v

  • Great little charger. Had one for years.

  • +2

victron bluesmart ip65s is a better buy as it has phone app controls.

    • +2

      Same price?

    • What if I don't need to control my chargers electrons with my handheld computer?

      • Victron can practically charge a completely dead battery as well, while the other chargers don't.

You also don't have to use a phone.

        • +1

I had battery ran flat couple of times and car started fine after plugging onto ctek overnight.

          • +1

@dcep: Yeah i meant as in one that has practically no voltage left other chargers don't attempt to charge at that point

            • @Tehcookiemonsta: I agree, I've had my unit not be able to charge a 0.0V battery. Gotta hit it with a dumb charger first to 'bring it up' a little first!

        • Many reviews & comments online says Ctek can bring a battery back from dead. Particularly the bigger amp chargers

    • +1

I couldn't think of anything worse - why the f do i need to get my phone involved in every aspect of everything. Thats a downgrade not an upgrade imo

  • What makes these so popular vs chargers half the price? I understand you sometimes get what you pay for but branding also adds to the price.

    • +3

      Quality.

      • +2

I think the comments in here show the quality, like i got mine 4 years ago, 10 years ago, 6 years ago….

    • Yeah you're right, CTEK seems to be known for quality but it does seem to be quality in this case

    • Reviews I saw online were saying rebranded cteks are bundled with some exotic weekend-only cars, like Maserati & similar.

  • Got mine 4 years ago from repco for $95.

  • How long this take to charge Tesla long range?

  • Thanks OP, ended up getting a MXS 10 been waiting on getting one for a while.

  • What do people use this on? Do I need one if I have two cars that gets driven daily? Do these prevent your batteries failing after 3-4 years or something?

    • +1

My car often sits in the garage for weeks now I work from home. I top up the battery occasionally.

If you drive daily, then no you likely dont need one.

    • +1

I have 2 of the CTek chargers,1 stays on my motorcycle all year unless I'm riding it,connected via a quick connect plug. The 2nd I use on my 2 cars, every 3-6 months I charge vehicle overnight.Once a year I recharge in Recondition mode.Very good if you are only driving short distances where the battery is only briefly being charged by the car alternator, particuarly if using AC & Headlights often.

    • +1

No I don't think they do, but everyone's battery dies eventually and when it does this might give you and extra few months of life until you can secure a bargain on a new battery.
