  • Just built my first PC and know nothing about keyboards.

Is this any good or are there better value ones?

    • It isn't a mechanical keyboard, so would avoid especially at this price. Amazon/AliExpress have plenty of decent actual mechanical boards at this price range.

I wouldn't go as far as saying avoid membrane keyboards. There's nothing wrong with them.

I actually prefer them. Each to their own.

        • Fair, though I feel you're overpaying a bit with this keyboard. Membranes and mechanicals both achieve the same basic function at the end of the day

    • +2

This is a membrane keyboard. $49 is pretty cheap for razer but keep in mind you can probably find a no-name brand mechanical keyboard that will feel much nicer to type on.

    • +3

i recommend looking at akko pre build keebs on pccg

It depends what you want out of a keyboard.
Membrane keyboards are generally cheaper yet still quite functional and quieter to use.
Mechanical keyboards are dearer and a lot more in fashion. they are easy to modify and often end up being a hobby. (can get expensive)
Because membrane keyboards are generally cheaper you can often get more options on the board at quite a reasonable price.
I have both. Both have plusses and minuses.

      • I'd like a mechanical keyboard but I wouldn't even know where to start. I don't want to get a bad keyboard as my first one.

Once you enter the custom community, its becomes a nightmare for your wallet

Buy either a keychron or akko hotswap keyboard and perhaps akko switches which are really good switches.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Ok I'll look into that, appreciate it!

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Also Keychron Gateron switches like milky yellows are good. Switches best to look at PCCG (ahhahah for delivery fee) or amazon sales (massive sales some weeks back).

Most people like akko lavenders or jelly blacks but its all personal.

Just looks are reviews online for sound test and check the actuation force since some springs feel heavy to type.

IF youre feeling custom, you can look at very expensive switches on daily clack. They have some switches sales some times if you wanting a specific switch

Do some research on the different types of switches (blue = loud, red = no click etc) Youtube is your friend. (even the quiet mech keys clunk a bit)
Cheap places to look at prices = Ali & ebay or:
          DSE Are having a sale.
Kmart If you want a real shop.
          Youtube is your friend.

I have one but have upgraded my keyboard… In saying that I quite enjoyed this keyboard

The main types of keyboards are membrane (this one) and mechanical keyboards. Generally membrane keyboards are cheaper than mechanical keyboards, but nowadays the price of mechs have gone down significantly.

First off, what do you need in a keyboard? Do you like a big one or a smaller one? Do you require a keypad? A noisy one or a fairly muted sound? Have you tried a mechanical keyboard before?

Membrane keyboards feel mushy and shallow, but not as noisy as some mechanical keyboards. Mechanical keyboards can have 3 different typing feelings depending on the switch of the keyboard. There are 3 types, clicky (loud with a bump at the end of a press), Tactile (pop sound with a bump at the end of the press), and linear (medium to low sound with a smoother press).

Akko prebuilds are really good for the price, keychrons are slightly pricier but made with more premium materials, or you can go all out and spend hundreds to thousands for groupbuy ones.

It depends on what is value to you. If its just a keyboard to you, this Razer will do just fine.

      • I'm looking at this akko keyboard as it's on sale with free shipping surprisingly from pccg. https://www.pccasegear.com/products/58923/akko-5087s-asa-mec…

Is this purple tactile any good for gaming or should I get something else? They have the same thing in a pink linear switch for same price.

        • They aren't the lightest switch, so it won't be optimal but it'll still work perfectly fine. You can always swap out the switches if you wanted to.

          • @CrispyChrispy: What about the jelly pink ones? Better? I started leaning towards that

        • +1

Usually I'd recommend Linear switches for gaming, as you have to fully press into the tactiles and clickies. So Imagine strafing on a keyboard, linears will register most of the presses, while tactiles and clickies will need to be pressed until you hit the bump (or bottom out) to register the input.

Linears are good for most people, especially for gaming. Personally, I use a tactile (Boba U4T :D ) as I type more than I game, but I have no problem in gaming with tactiles anyway.

So the keyboard linked is also hotswappable, which means you can change switches by just pulling them out and replacing with a suitable one. So if you like to get the akko, get the linear ones first and buy a set of tactiles or even clickies in the future to try out different switches.

    • are you after a keyboard for gaming, work and/or both?
      wired or wireless?
using just with the pc or with mobile devices and need bluetooth?
do you need a silent keyboard or okay with noise?
how much are you prepared to spend?
do you absolutely need rgb, just a single colour backlight or no backlight at all?
      how big is your desk?

      • Gaming
        Don't care wireless or wired
        With PC only
        Okay with noise
        Maybe around $100-150 max
RGB is nice but it's not a necessity
Desk isn't too big, not sure exact sizing

    • this is pretty good for office use, not so loud, plus KGB makes you look more professional

for gaming, maybe mechanical is better, but this would work

Had this keyboard for a few years now. Can't fault it. If there was something wrong with mine then I'd buy it again.
