  • Best bang for your points? And go!

  • $100 17,450 points, $1000 approx 175k points i guess

      so 0.57 cents per point - bloody hell, Qantas points are worthless these days

      • That’s why I never understand the hype about the qff points, often you get the “promotion” to convert other rewards points to qff points. For example, 2000 wws points to 1000 qff points, but gc $100 takes you 20,000 points at qantas store…

        • +5

          The hype is that Qantas Points can be worth 8 cents per point when used for certain first and business class flights. Only fools redeem them on gift cards.

            @VantageXL: Classic rewards flights are the way to go… paid 150k points for business class SIN return.

          • +2

            @VantageXL: I'm sorry, but there is no way you can find anything near 8 cents per point these days. Even some super-specific business-to-first upgrades aren't worth that much anymore. And good luck actually finding flights or upgrades available. Would love to be proven wrong.

              @Frukoz: Just flew BKK-DXB-CDG on Emirates in Business and MXP-DOH-BKK return on Qatar in Business

              Cost about 225k QF points + taxes

              • @tommynolips: I was curious so I looked into it…

                Emirates BKK-DXB-CDG business is super easy to buy for $1,720 + taxes
                Qatar MXP-DOH-BKK business is easy to buy for $3,315 + taxes
                Total = $5,033.86 for 225k points
                So 2.2 cents per point… yeah that is pretty unimpressive considering this is supposed to be the best use of points.

                Plus this is with a stopover. You can fly business class with Thai BKK-CDG for cheaper, and it's direct.

                  This is the key - your Qantas points are never really worth the value you think they are, because the actual flights themselves are usually overpriced.

                  If you get 3c value per point on $4000 of business class flight that you could have got with a "lesser" airline for $2000, then guess what ? Your points were only really worth 1.5c - you're not really getting anything better from the Qantas Business than you would from Malaysian Airlines Business, or just about any other airline that can get you to your destination !

              @Frukoz: I actually based that 8 cent figure off a flight I took last month. First class on Emirates which they were selling for $10k. Obviously that flight isn't always quite that expensive but that's what they were charging at the time.

              Still, even if you value points at 2 cents each the value of 1,000 Qantas Points far exceeds $10 off your shop, to use the Woolworths example given above.

              As for availability, I've booked seven Classic Reward fares this year, three of which have been first class and none of which were booked more than six months in advance. The key is that I am willing to fly economy (either with cash or points) to Asia and then first/business from there onwards. This is the number one tip that I give people. As far as upgrades go, I don't even bother trying as a lowly Bronze.

                @VantageXL: That's the thing though, without the points you would never spend $10k on those flights. The crazy price of the tickets makes the points seem like a great deal, but in reality, it's not something most point collectors would come close to paying. In fact, you could go as far as to say that those flights are priced that high as a strategy to get people to use their points.

                I'm not sure what Woolworths example you're referring to. The gift cards are 4,390pts for $25 - so a dismal 0.57 cents per point. If you're talking about everyday rewards points - that 2 cents per $ only applies to points you are collecting from spending at WW. Can't convert backward. Completely different scenario.

                Appreciate the insights into the classic reward fares though - I'll have a look into this - thank you for the tip!

          • @VantageXL: but what if you don't fly and isn't jetstar still cheaper?

            • +1

              @Frozensage: 'Isn't Jetstar cheaper?'

              For Business class that they don't offer? Yes… yes it is cheaper.

            • @Frozensage: This is my question too, what about those who don’t fly? Would it be pointless signing up Qantas point CC’s etc? Should another reward Avenue be taken? Never many answers on this.

              • +3

                @Edamamme: It's subjective really.

                Let's say you take out a new credit card and receive 50,000qff points. Let's pretend you need to spend $3k in 3 months and get another 2000 points from doing that. Let's say by using a credit card instead of cash, you pay an additional $20 in transaction fees for that $3k.

                If you want to buy gift cards, they are worth 0.57 cents per point minus the extra transaction fees. That comes to $276.40. Is it worth the time, hassle, potential risk of rejection on your credit history, and the additional debt against your name for $275? That's for you to decide.

                If you have time on your hands, a decent salary, good credit history, and you're not looking to borrow for e.g. a mortgage any time soon, then go for it. Personally, I've been collecting points to use towards flights, hoping to get around 2 cents/pts. I'm frustrated because it's not coming close to that, and I wouldn't have bothered had I known points would depreciate so much.

                Also, a lot of ppl do this as a hobby, which is probably the best approach - a bit of fun on the side that you can use to treat yourself every now and then.

                • +1

                  @Frukoz: Really appreciate this detailed response. I think hobby is the best way to look at it for those who don’t travel!

    • some are actually 16,000 pts for $100. but like other said better wait for rewards flights be brought back.

  • after holding out for over half a year I finally used it with the last 20% off couple of month ago, and then 2 weeks later black friday happened and it was 25% off cards… just can't win

    • lol…at least you were happy for that time being but not ending happy 😅
