  • These must be awesome for that price

    • Expensive bins.

    • The XT12 is.

But I had some issues recently with XD4s that got returned, wifi dropping all of a sudden when moving between points. So a reluctance to go back to ASUS atm. Though these could well fix my problems of needing 4 devices in my house instead of 2.

    • Unless you are running greater than 1 gbps connection, XT8 is plenty for almost all use cases.
If you are running greater than 1gbps, then you are in a whole new category and probably none of these options are for you.

Man, a $1249 budget would pay for a decent amount of ethernet run in-wall, in most houses. (I used to do it for work).

Outside of edge cases (like cement walls, and such, so no dropping cable) you reallllly need to be a glutton for punishment to drop 'hard wire' cash on wifi; at least IMO.

Even a single run or two, and additional regular access points would make more sense to me; and save probably $500.

To each their own solution I guess.

    • Agreed. Cost of these units even makes me feel sparky hourly rates are so reasonable lol

    • I have the XT8 with no regrets, picked it up for $650 last BF/CM from JBhifi
For me I needed the extra coverage and performance, I was noticing some dropoffs and bandwith issues with all my home connected stuff, All because I don't have any ethernet runs for the main bandwidth hogs (apart from my PC).

I am using the 5ghz dedicated wireless backhaul which seems to be good but I think I'm going to go up and run a cable for the backhaul, otherwise I'm happy for everything else to be on wifi.

      • But if one wires backhaul why buy the xt8? I only ask as I was considering this as a mesh or getting a powerful Asus rt-ax86 U for primary and wiring ethernet to say a cheaper Asus like the ax58u or ax55 etc.

If you don't wire I can understand the xt8 dedicated tri-band..but if ones wiring would the normal Asus routers not have more grunt?

So would you combine an ethernet in the wall with a few wireless access points?

      • +1

That's my setup - 2 x Unifi APs with ethernet backhaul. One is a UAP-AC-LR (WiFi 5) and the other a U6 Lite (WiFi 6). Just works.

    • How much does it cost to do ethernet just between 2 point of the house single story?

      • +1

Really depends, but I got a quote 6 months ago for $600 for 3 x 15m data point outlet. Won't apply to double storey houses of course.

    • What if all possible Ethernet devices are cabled, but I need better Wifi for my wireless devices and have gigabit internet? Is it worth it?

    • +3

      The renter's connundrum
Have to buy janky products that only make sense if you cant drill holes in the wall, cant afford to buy because you keep buying expensive jank to work around your landlord

    • +1

Doesn't help me with a long 2 storey townhouse with no ability to run a cable internally upstairs.

Each house is different. Everyone's requirements are different.

      • Agreed. In that scenario, EoP is the choice.
It has become relatively reliable, finally. (At least, more so than wifi).

It might look slower in theory, but the stable jitter and no packet wait if you have neighbours with wifi also, means if you watch streaming content, or game, you'll be much happier.

Besides, half to a full gigabit is usually enough for home users (not always; but usually).

I highly recommend the XD6 if you have a wired backhaul running through your house. Remember the other tri band routers use one band for backhaul which makes the XD6 excellent value for the performance you get.

I get speeds of 700mbps over wifi which is on par with some of the more expensive options.

  • Not even WiFi 6E for this price..no thanks.

  • +1

Forgive me, the picture looks like trash bins 🤣

    • Oh yeh, it does too, new design, hidden bin wifi.

  • Got the xt8’s on Black Friday eBay sales for $570something. Pretty good kit.
I’m happy with the speeds and mesh. Got a few consoles and some tuya lights plus a bunch of Alexa’s. all runs well.

  • Amazon price match JB Wi-Fi

Wait for them to go on clearance @ JB Lo-Fi🤷‍♂️

  • Mmm overpriced Asus Products

  • I heard buying these from the UK was a bad idea, is that the same for models from the USA?
