OzBargain's Favourite Supermarket?

Let's settle this once and for all.

Personally, Coles all the way! Whenever I go to Woolies they are always understaffed and the self-checkout queue is ridiculous.

Do you go to the one that has the better gift card promo?
Are you after all those Flybuys/Everyday rewards points?

Or do you avoid all of these and go to Costco so you can "bUy In BuLk"!

Or do you support the Germans and love that infamous "Middle Aisle" at Aldi?

Vote away!

No, I have chosen not to include "Whoever has the cheaper product for the week" as we are after brand loyalty here…….

Why isn't Drakes in the list?

    • Well given you're a fellow Victorian JV I didn't think you'd be doing your food shopping in SA or QLD.

      • JV shops at Port Adelaide so they can discuss the Prison Bar jumper issue with the locals.

  • My local.

It was Aldi, but now they're rolling out the self-serve checkouts….. I guess I don't like any of them?

      @Dibs
The only reason I don't shop at Aldi is because they don't have self-serve checkouts.

Self service is the way to go. What's there not to like about self service?

      • +2

For when I've got a few items I agree it is convenient, but for a full weekly shop I find it a clumsy hassle. However, I don't like the general trend of reducing the number of staff they're employing so that the customer can do their job for them. Having a balance for those times when there are only a few items I think is great, but with Coles and Woolies I find now the actual staff checkouts are typically short-staffed.

I do agree that there should be more space for packing etc. But I still prefer it over accepting cans on top of avocados, etc.

          • @iDroid: Some Coles and Woolies stores have large self-check aisles, as large as the manned ones. Even easier to organise the shopping, bags, and handbag than at the manned aisle and can do it without any pressure. The ones at my local Coles are even better than the one in the image.

brand loyalty? hand in ur ozbargain badge now

    • Yeah who would do that? We need another vote for that.

Coles with the recent double dipping to get 40% in flybuys bonus, I sometimes struggle to find thing to fill the limit.

  • I find that it depends on the location for the actual store itself.. I've lived in Perth, Melbourne CBD and rural VIC, i've alternated between woolies and coles. Sometimes Coles has the larger store in the area, with much neater and cleaner feel, sometimes it's the opposite. I do find that flybuys is more versatile though so I do prefer Coles for that reason.

      Tuckerbag then

  • I probably buy most things from Coles and Woolies but I’ll visit Aldi the most.

  • I usually shop at Woolies as it's easier to get to and has plenty of parking. Today I had to go to the shopping centre with Coles, so I did some shopping there. Nowhere near enough staff and service desk not staffed at all. Glad I don't have to go to Coles!

i do majority of my shop at Aldi and the remainder at Coles both are within 1.1km of my house

Lol. I drive 1.1km and I pass 1 neighbours house.

I used to be a very loyal fan of Coles but few months back my loyalty changed to Woolies.

The main differentiator I find about Woolies is you dont need to worry about paper receipts as it gets stored in your everyday rewards account. I am surprised why other big companies like coles aldi etc still have not brought such hassle free experience and still rely on giving physical receipts

I often use giftcards saved on my phone. Woolworths scanners at self checkout are much much better than Coles. At woolies, it takes hardly 1-3 attempts whereas at Coles it takes numerous attempts and often still can't scan without customer service rep's help.

They also have more and better vareity of Indian grocery items at cheaper price than Indian grocery store themselves.

    • I am surprised why other big companies like coles aldi etc still have not brought such hassle free experience and still rely on giving physical receipts

Coles only just recently implemented digital fuel vouchers linked to Flybuys. I wouldn't think it'll be long until digital receipts linked to Flybuys become a thing.

ALDI cheaper. Coles got better quality food (bread, deserts, etc.).

  • I voted for Woolies because of readily available e-gift cards, easy app(s) and more conveniently located supermarkets.
Was a mainly Coles shopper for the first 3/4 of my life
    .

  • The IGA near my house. It has almost everything and shopping there means I don't need a car saving me thousands each year.

    • So you're that single vote

      • For now. I'm sure there is at least one other Ozbargain user with very specific circumstances that pushes IGA to the top for them.

    • I just couldn't pay those high prices, I would just get Woolworths/Coles delivery instead, I'm confident it would be cheaper.

      • I know it varies store-to-store, but I find the prices are not too different and the sale items are just as cheap. I do buy a lot of discounted food on Amazon too though.

        • I think the main issue with IGA is lack of generic products and particular products being very expensive which can ruin the total price of your shopping.

  • I take all my Vietnamese friends to Bunnings and let them choose our next spicy meat BBQ.

At the same time I scan all my tools into my pockets with my phone!

  • Aldi isn't in my state so when I visit states with Aldi I'm like "What's the big fuss?". Their fresh food section is depressing too.

  • Woolworths once a month for my 10% off rewards shop, the rest of the time combination of Aldi and Coles as they are next to each other

  • +1

Whichever one offers the best points deal. Usually Coles.

  • Woolworths all the way, because Coles and aldi are 20+ mins away and IGA is a rip off.

  • +1

I bounce between coles woolies whichever has best discounts, nothing to do with gift cards tho.

  • +2

You can't beat Coles when you have two flybuys cards between you and your partner and you balance them enough so that every discount is $50-60 per week for four months for a $50 discount voucher or 10000 points, so basically we spend $100-120 and get $100/20000 points.

Woolworths never offer the same deals, especially with the same consistency.

However its worth noting that Aldi have some everyday prices 30-60% under the price of Coles/Woolworths and the rest are 15-20% lower, if you don't shop carefully you can easily spend more then the $50 voucher's that Coles compared to Aldi.

  • I only shop at where it is the cheapest.
I am happy to walk 100m to the supermarket next door even if it's only 5 cents cheaper.

  • Prefer Aldi but use Coles and Woolies when the points and 1/2 price offers are decent.

  • Well…

ALDI (which my wife calls my third favourite place) my closest local, but mostly for the special buys, especially when on clearance but not actually for most groceries.
Then Woollies, for everything else, which happens to also be in the same local shopping centre.
Coles comes last. As the nearest one is out of the way for me. And getting in and out that store is a major pain.

If you asked me a couple of years ago before I moved, it would have been reversed as I had two Coles within walking distance, but none of the others.
