  • I obviously want a healthy diet for my doggo but I don't want to spend more than I need to. Is this a good budget option? Or do the ozbargainers have another recommendation?

    • +4

Hi its not budget. I've tried other brands and with most cheapo's they (2 x ridgy's) always had the sh!ts. I've been using blackhawk for over 3 years and its good for my pups internals. Cheers

      • +1

same report from me, my woofers like it and feel its pretty good for them

        • Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a go. What is the usual use by date on the bags? Just because I already have a fair bit of food at home.

          • @noobshoes: Found on the FAQ for blackhawk on their site, 18 months from date of manufacture. And reseal the bags to stop the fats oxidising and reducing pallatability!

      • +3

My dog used to love Blackhawk. We tried a few, but his favourite was the grain-free chicken small breed. He stopped eating them all it since they changed their formulas earlier in 2022. I believe they switched out a lot of the animal protein to pea protein. I'm sure its still a decent product, just be aware that today's product is different tothe pre-2022 product many people rave about..

        • Agree. I started using it 9 years ago when it was only sold out of 2 boarding kennels on the outskirts of Perth metro in plain bags (sounds like an old timer story…). was half the price of the big brands and had more kgs. Really good and held up for a while but prices just kept ramping up and lost a little in quality once mass produced for petbarn / city farmers. Used to be bigger pieces too which helped slow down my Lab with something to chew. Still think it’s a great buy at this price

If you have an everyday rewards card you can score some extra points here https://www.petculture.com.au/everyday-rewards. 6000 points (worth $30 at the woolies checkout) when selecting auto deliver, or 5x points.

    • +2

Auto delivery also bought it down to $84 for me. Combined with 15% Cashrewards this is like a four layer bargain 👌

      • did the same, thanks!

      • +2

Would "PETMAS5" Coupon negate the 13% Cashrewards Cashback as I can't see it listed on the Cashrewards site ?

        • If it is not stated on the cashrewards site, then yes. Mine has still tracked thou, but I suspect it will get cancelled.
Still a great deal without the cashrewards

      • I don't think you will get cashrewards back unless PETMAS5 code listed on them.

        • Tried with the 13% CashRewards see how we go.

  • anything for cats?

  • This is not bad price actually, then $30 rewards points is sweetener

  • Anyone know what the price of shipping to WA? Don't really wanna sign up just to see shipping costs.

    • approximately $40. I put in 1 x 20kg blackhawk and 1 x nexgard

      • Thanks boss. Killed the deal for WA

  • Hmmm my border collie is only 8 months old, would he be too young for the adult size of this?

    • fwiw I kept my 2 pups on puppy kibble up to 18months. it fattened them up quite nicely and then slowly transitioned to adult.

  • With currently 4 medium to large dogs in our family I've never been in the market for this expensive dog food.

I've had many dogs in the past typically living healthy lives to 15/16 on cheaper but decent quality food.

Is this just a sham for those that feel they love their dog more if they spend unnecessarily?

Or is it mainly due to dietary requirements?

Not trying to trigger anyone just often wondered.

    • What are the foods you recommend?

      • Generally supercoat mixed with minced fresh rabbit

        • Hol up

          Fresh rabbit?

          • @SlifSlif: Yes. It's delivered minced fortnightly and we freeze it to make it last the 2 weeks. We used to use kangaroo but a new pup in the household meant switching over to rabbit. Puppies can get bad stomach aches from kangaroo. We will probably reintroduce kangaroo next year.

Science Vs actually did a good podcast on this topic. Cheap pet food is fine it’s more over feeding that is the problem.

    • Perhaps but for my instance i've tried several brands and it just wouldn't suit the dogs from the above comment i posted to hair loss to lerthagy.BH was not recommended to me by anyone as some tend to push the brand, vets especially- depends what the flavour of the month is… but from reading reviews, then testing it and then sticking to it- works for me, happy to spend the extra.

Sorry to be the resident pet food wowser, but please be aware that feeding processed food of any kind as a primary food source to your pets is not good for them. Dry food/kibble is especially bad. Many studies show that epidemic levels of obesity, diabetes, arthritis and cancer are prevalent in pets that eat primarily processed food.

Imagine taking all your food, blending it into a paste, baking it into little biscuits at high temperatures, then spraying it with fat, vitamins and flavouring to make it palatable. You wouldn't eat it yourself, so why do it to your pet?

Roughly speaking, dog food should be around 70% meat and bone, 20% fruit and veg and 10% offal. There's plenty of vet-approved species-appropriate balanced food recipes online that are surprisingly cheap and easy to prepare. If you don't have the time but have a budget, you can purchase pre-made fresh food meals from companies like Lyka.

Of course processed food has a place as supplemental and convenience food when required - everybody needs a junk food hit now and then - but it shouldn't be your pets main source of nutrition.

    • Which studies? Science Vs actually did a good podcast on this topic. Cheap pet food is fine it’s more over feeding that is the problem.

MN Would dogs be healthier and live longer being fed on something more expensive? I’d really like to know that. And that research does not exist.
So where does this leave us? Well there’s no evidence we know of that dogs or cats who eat the cheapest kibble every day are doing worse than pets eating the finest food available. Now, every now and then a pet food factory will have an outbreak of something like Salmonella[130][131]. But that is true for big pet food companies[132] — and fancy boutique ones.[133][134]

After lapping up the science — here's where we're at: there are a lot of different pet foods out there … and most of the stuff you get at the store is probably just fine for your pet. Even the cheap stuff. As long as you don't give them too much of it.

      • Here's an article which cites more than 20 studies and other sources:
        https://www.bigdogpetfoods.com/guides/the-impact-of-processi…

        One relevant paragraph:
"Another detrimental effect of the extrusion process when it comes to commercial kibble is that it triggers a chemical process called the Maillard reaction. This leads to the formation of numerous toxic compounds including acrylamide and advanced glycation end products, both of which have been linked to a multitude of different disease state - including cancer, in people and pets (7, 11-14). This is such an important topic that a paper released in 2011 asked the question – “Should veterinarians consider acrylamide that potentially occurs in starch-rich foodstuffs as a neurotoxin in dogs?” (15). Unfortunately, there are many commercial kibbles on the market that contain over 50% starchy carbohydrate content."

For anyone really serious about feeding their pets biologically appropriate balanced diets, Dr Karen Becker in the US is one of the more popular advocates. Here's her recipe book:
