Child Seat Requirements in Malaysia

Is anyone aware of the current requirements for children in rideshares in Malaysia.
From what I understand, kids below 1.35m are required to be in a booster (or child seat depending on age) since Jan 1, does this mean we need to cart around seats in order to use Grab? Apparently Taxis are exempt from the requirement.

Cheers

  • ….current requirements for children in rideshares in Malaysia.

A bit of mula in Malaysia can usually solve a lot of issues! haha

(I don't have the actual answer, but the Malaysian version of the rideshare app (if there is one) will probably have country-specific info on these sorts of things).

    • Yes, I have googled but a definitive reference has eluded me and this being a very multi-cultural forum chances are someone in-country or who has travelled there recently could assist and I wouldn't waste times googling stuff that doesn't help.

But if it makes you feel important telling me to google things, then whatever floats your boat.

  • Nah, looks like I was on the Singapore website where things are more strict, I think in MY there are Grab Family cars that carry 1 boster seat, but it looks like they are also exempt, though it is difficult to find a definitive reference.

There seems to be some confusion around whether rideshare drivers are exempt or not.

I guess the next question would be… if a rideshare vehicle gets pulled over for an unrestrained child, who would be responsible for paying the fine? If the driver is responsible, let them worry about the legalities of it (as long as they're happy to take you).

Legalities aside, if you've seen the way they drive in Malaysia, it might not be such a bad idea to use one…

      • The way people drive in Malaysia is different, more aggressive and so on but I have rarely seen car accidents except on those rural highways when people drive at like 150kmph+. Whereas in Aust (or Perth in my experience) there's multiple accidents everyday on a straight AF Freeway.

        • Err I totally disagree with this. Malaysia is one of the most dangerous places in SEA to be on the road. The combination of speed and lax enforcement don't assist. I lived in KL for three years and drove past numerous mass fatality events. Unlike every where else, the death toll there is getting worse not better.

          • @Lunarboogie: I was gonna say, it's rare to see minor collisions (car to car) but the accidents that do happen are pretty bad. If you have been driving from a Westernised country then it will be terrible to drive there, I wouldn't even try.

            • @MeesusEff: Agree. When I lived there, I didn't drive once. I used Grab for everything. It's a wonderful country and I genuinely miss it, but I don't miss the traffic or the road warriors. Malaysians also don't question the high road toll or feel there is anything that can be done to reduce it. Instead, most seem to have this fatalistic view or that it was 'insya Allah'.

In Malaysia, the only police that care about child seats are those that have yet to make their bribery quotas for the month.

There are more than child seats to worry about on Malaysian roads, the Malaysians.

  • I'm from Malaysia and have heaps of family there, I have never seen or heard of any child in a car seat lol.

  • child seat website should be telling the truth

    • The sellers of car seats stating what is the requirement just sounds like a bit of a conflict of interest :)

In Australia, child car seat is only required up to 7 years old.
Malaysia requiring car seat up to 12 years old only benefit the car seat manufacturers/sellers

      Just saying…
