Why Use a Landing Pad?

Protecting your drone's motors
Your drone sucks air into the motors to keep them cool. We want to keep as much dust, sand and other fine materials away from the drone as possible. A lot of my Drone Adventures have takeoff points in dusty and sandy place, so a landing pad really helps to protect the drone in these situations.

Stop the blades hitting grass
Hitting things with the drone rotor blades is never a good idea. If you're setting off your drone from long grass, having a drone landing pad helps to flatten off the grass and also actually ensures that you do check the ground first, moving branches, sticks etc.

$9 investment for $1500+ worth of hardware was the reason why I bought it. Even if don't need it 😂

  • I mean, could you just find a trimmed patch of grass? I also dont think the small area coverage of this item would prevent dust being sucked into the rotors all that much as it'll suck from along the outside of the pad anyway.

    Interesting vaniety item nonetheless..

    • +1

There is often not mown grass when you're flying these out in the field, and the height of the blades for a lot of drones is quite low to the ground.

The rotors are sucking from the top and blowing down, so unsure what you mean about dust and what it has to do with the landing pad.

      • Could use an old shirt and some golf balls as weights? this is a cleaner solution for sure though.

Regarding the dust - its mentioned in the features of the listing. I don't understand its point either.

        • Oh I see, you're right they mention it.

When you land on a rough organic surface, it can disturb and kicks up the dust everywhere. Landing on a cleaner surface like concrete is much preferable, I suppose they're saying this pad solves that problem.

I bring a sturdy box in my car when I take my drone out for this purpose, but I suppose this pad is more portable. Looks a bit tacky though!

  • Took my drone all through europe on some crazy landscapes, a landing pad was never needed.

  • From experience (CASA licensed drone operator here), you'd have to be a pretty good pilot to land a drone on one of these. Takeoff is fine, but generally I would hand-catch a drone than faff around trying to land a drone on a small patch like this, especially in anything other than completely still conditions.

    • I also took the CASA test, but for a drone like the mini 3 pro, being under 250 grams i believe the CASA registration is not required.

I'd suggest the suitability of the mat depends on drone, size, features and landing pad size. For a larger drone like a full sized Mavic would be trickier to land on a 55cm pad, compared to a smaller drone.

For context mine is the mini 3 pro, and this is the larger 75cm pad. So imo there is enough coverage and the mini 3 pro features are useful too for a safe landing and take off.

Need to start actually using it more before hand launching or hand landing.

    • $19 at Digidirect and I paid $9 for mine after tl using $10 off with JB perks bday.

If you got JB to price match $28 from Amazon, it will be $18 after using the $10 perks

  • Quick review if anyone is interested

    1. Not just a piece of nylon, as it has a flexible outer sturdy flex ring and is 75cm in circumference (drone is about 35-40cm circumference)
    2. Might not work that well on a very dry beach (not tested) as the loose sand might be an issue with pegs
    3. Works well on good grass, the goes deep into the soil as there are 3x 14.5cm pegs
    4. $9 investment on a $1500+ drone setup seems reasonable, mainly intended to use when starting out and gaining more confidence until hand launches and hand landings
