Portable Storage. NVMe with Case or Portable SSD?

Hi all

I bought a refurbished desktop that came with a 128 GB NVME SSD which is running low on space. Hence thinking of expanding the storage. Should I?

Upgrade the onboard SSD?

Get a NVME SSD with an enclosure and connect
externally via USB?

Get a portable SSD like my Passport etc?

What is the most cost effective option.

The usage of the desktop is casual browsing and downloads.

Thanks

  • If you can, swap out the internal drive.
Otherwise, the Samsung T7 drives are pretty good for a cheap but fast SSD.

Personally I've got a 1TB T5, 1TB T7 and 1TB Samsung 980 in the Asus ROG Strix Arion case. They're all pretty quick and do the job!

Why are you fixated on portable drive for a desktop? Get a SATA SSD and install it internally. You don't need NVMe for that use case.

Just get a SATA mechanical HDD?

    • Thanks, don't the mechanical ones have a higher failure rate than the SSDs?

    • Don't get a mechanical drive… the speed difference even for just general browsing and stuff is massive, and the cost isn't that much to go SSD anyway.
Also SSD's use less power and are more reliable.

  • I've always gone the root of as much storage as possible. In that case I always suggest replacing the internal drive and then get an external case to put the old one in (like the one that just got posted on ozbargain).
