Do Your Capsicums Smell Bad?

I don’t know if it’s just me but lately every time I buy a capsicum from any of the Colesworth stores it has a very distinct chemical tang to the aroma and flavour. Quite frankly, I think it stinks, and if I cook it with anything it ruins the dish. I ended up chucking out a whole stir fry the other night because it smelt awful. Anyone else had this experience?

Capsicums from the local markets or bought at IGA are not affected, so I’m thinking the major retailers must be doing something to them to make them last longer in storage or something.

Small fact, Green, Red and Yellow are all the same, just different stage of ripening.

    • small fact, big savings!

Not really, they serve different purposes.

Green is more crunchy and more tart whereas the yellow is softer and generally sweeter.

        • What about red?

          • @[Deactivated]: Generally the sweetest. Green > Yellow > Red but the way we grow and manipulate things, they don't really end up being too different (red/yellow).

            • @coffeeinmyveins: Good to know. thanks fellow ozzzybarginer

  • I haven't noticed but I have noticed they seem more watery and thus heavier to me and the green lacking in taste. But then i rarely buy capsicum from Woolworths.

    • Everything has a bit more 'waste' attached these days. Chicken parts (breast/thigh) aren't as trim and often contain a few bits of bone and 'slime'. Lots more fat still on steaks, longer stalks on veggies and strawberries.
Just adds to the weight you pay for but can't use.

      • longer stalks on veggies

Just waiting for a farmer to come in and post that ridiculous article that was posted a few months ago where they were "shocked" and "appauled" that people were cutting off the stems of brocolli.

Yeah sure it's got the most nutrients but it tastes like absolute cardboard and I'm not paying for it.

But apparently if you boil it for 6 hours with half your spice rack it makes the bin smell nice when you chuck it out.

        • for tough large broccoli stalks you can slice off the outside stringy layer and the inside should be nice to eat

for medium and small stalks, be a man and just eat it
