Nest Smoke Detector / Smart Detectors

Hi all,

I've had a number of smoke detectors go bad lately and basically drive the neighbours mad in the middle of the night (commercial premises in the middle of a residential neighbourhood) requiring an emergency electrician call out to disconnect. The detectors just keep going off despite pressing the button repeatedly with a broom, and some are just too high up (5m+) to reach with a broom.

I'm looking for an option that is internet connected and will allow me to turn the alarm off remotely or via an app if it's confirmed there is no smoke or there's a fault. Happy to consider other options, I just don't know what's out there.

It's happened enough times now that I'm afraid to go away for even a week. It's been suggested that bugs/dust cause this. I'll need about 9 in total, so I don't know if there's any way to get a bulk discount.

Thank you!

You can use your phone to silence Nest detectors. However, you must be within 1-2 metres of the detector, otherwise it will refuse to silence it. So not suitable for your purpose. Furthermore, I would not suggest a use case are you've suggested, it's an pretty dangerous proposition.

    • What other options do I have? Back to base? Currently I don't know when the smoke detectors are going off when I'm off site until someone complains.

  • What exactly is your question ?

Happy with my Nest smoke detector.

    Advantages:

    • Regularly tests itself
    • Has an option of a night light when you pass it
    • Allows you to stop the alarm before it starts (if you're cooking)
    • You can either get battery or hardwired.

I think the regulations only impact you in QLD (I fairly certain they comply in NSW and VIC) but I could be wrong.

    • Ok thanks, so in NSW they could be ok for commercial use?

I think the regulations are more to do with how it's wired rather than the property type. If you look up previous deals on here, you'll see comments around it.

Interesting experience - I've been using 4 since 2020 and I've only had one 'go bad' which was in my garage. What it did was report that the sensor had failed and that the device needed to be replaced - no alarms going off etc.

The new Clipsal Iconic Wiser smoke alarm may suit your needs but no idea if you can silence it 'remotely' using the App.

This part sounds good - New dual transmission detection chamber and algorithm to help mitigate false alarms caused by dust or small insects.

I would like to know well the app/smart features are integrated though!
