Early Registration and CTP Renewal

When paying for CTP and registration, is the period renewed from the day you make the payment, or does it stay as 1 year from the original expiry date?

For example:

CTP expiry 1st Dec 2022.
CTP renewed 10th Nov 2022.

Would the expiry date in 2023 be the 1st of Dec 2023 or would it now be the 10th Nov 2023 (effectively losing 21 days).

And would it be the same for Rego?

Bit of a rookie question that I feel silly asking, but I'm only in my 2nd year of car ownership so you'll have to excuse me.

Don't want to be losing a couple weeks of rego/CTP for nothing.

Rego & CTP renewal starts at end of expiry date.

    • Awesome. Cheers!

Yep, as above. Conversely, even if you wait a bit and renew AFTER your expiry, guess what? Same date next year.

    So
    CTP expiry 1st Dec 2022.
    CTP renewed 10th Jan 2023.
CTP expiry is now 1st Dec 2023.

There is a limit on this, I think 90 days.

This is true, but also important to know there is no ‘grace period’. Once it expires, you cannot legally drive the vehicle on the roads, except to get an inspection. So effectively it’s OK to let your rego expire for up to 90 days as long as you don’t drive.

After 90 days you’ll need a blue slip inspection and to re-register which is a pain.

In NSW. When you purchase the CTP policy they will usually ask for the start date, which matches the rego date.
