Help Buying a Used Seven Seater - Budget $25,000

Hello OzBargainers,

I am looking to buy seven seater vehicle with the following criteria.

Budget - under $25k
Brand - Japanese or Korean
Year - 2015+

Any suggestions?

Is this a good time to buy? I keep hearing used car market is going to crash :). I noticed a few price reductions in Carsales , wondering if I can start low balling :p

Kia Carnival for your Korean flavour

Honda Odyssey for your Japanese flavour

    • Second this - by far the best value and far easier to live with if you need the seats on a regular basis compared to a 7 seat SUV as most 7 seat SUV's are pretty cramped if you are using actually using the last row.

The other options in the same market as the Carnival and origins you outlined are mostly grey market imports that come with their own set of unique problems for ownership or Aus market Toyota vans where people are asking crazy money for them secondhand.
If you are completely fixed on wanting the 4WD look, want decent value secondhand, are willing to consider euro and plenty of parts around - the XC90 Volvo's (the D5 models) are worth a look as they are the benchmark for a 7 seater that actually works with kids.

High fuel consumption with the Odyssey , from reviews I've read

      • what is the high fuel consumption figure you are referring to?

I drive a 2016 Odyseey with 120K on the clock, Sydney to Goldcoast 8L per 100km, normal drop off and pick up inner city drive 10.8 to 11.8L/100 Km. As a 2.4L engine, i think it is not high.

My friend drives a Toyota Rukus 2.4L as well, 12-13L/100km and it is not even a 7-seater.

I am not sure what fuel consumption for Carnival

You sound like every carsales advertiser's favourite kind of person! (Don't be surprised if you get ignored!) lol

    • Lol. I am happy to pay the fair price but not the temporary inflated price coz of COVID.

but not the temporary inflated price coz of COVID.

then your shit out of luck.

        • Well, I noticed the ship seems to be turning so just confirming with the fellow mates.

      • It's not because of covid , it's because new car sales can't meet the demand of buyers !

        • +5

Which is because of COVID - supply chain issues , semiconductor shortages and the likes.

Cool, then wait until it's not "inflated" due to covid. That's like saying you don't want to pay the current price for a house because the market "will crash" in 5 years.

You don't get to dictate what the market pays for something. If you're not willing to pay then someone else probably is at the current price.

        • +1

Well house and cars are different classes. Houses are assets (mostly) - land appreciates. Cars are never an asset ( apart from collectibles may be).
So it’s not the same as waiting for house price crashing. The used car market economy we see now is NOT common and it is temporary, hopefully for a short time.

            if you say so.

            Wanna share that crystal ball?

wondering if I can start low balling :p

Last time someone tried to lowball me on a vehicle, I accidentally gave them the wrong address when they wanted to inspect… whoopsie!

  • I noticed a few price reductions in Carsales

Those reductions will be on crappy cars that people think they can get a lot of money for. I've seen 30 year old beaters that barely start being put up for $10k. Then they drop to 3k. Then get sold for half that. THat doesn't mean the entire market is that way, just some of them. A normal car with no issues and of recent vintage will fetch a premium in the current market.

wondering if I can start low balling :p

SUre but expect to be ignored. The current market is a sellers market, they don't have time for stupid lowball offers. Reasonable offers would be considered, but if you come in and offer 50% of the asking price, you're not going to get lucky like you seem to think you will.

    • I wasn’t planning on 50%. May be 15%.

      • That's not exactly a "lowball" offer.

A lowball offer is a car selling for $20k and you coming in and saying $12k.

  • are you wanting a permanent 7 seater or a 5 seater with optional 3rd row (additional 2 seats) ?

if the latter then diesel outlander.

    • +1

Except if you don’t drive highways often. Stick with petrol for city driving.

  • +1

There's still high demand for new car sales and less new cars arriving in the country so the used car market will still be hot for at least a year.

Put your requirements into carsales, filter by 7 seats, $20k - $25k, then filter by all brands from Korea or Japan and see what the results say. Shortlist a few based off of your search results then ask back here for comparisons.

Help Buying a Used Seven Seater

    this looks good…

    • That’s not Used!

      • Pretty sure most of the ones in the warehouse have been used.

        • +2

That doesn’t count. When you buy an iPhone you could say it’s used because somebody in the factory tested it.

      And the useless contributions continue

How often are you using the 3rd row.

    Everytime - Kia Carnival
Every now and then - Kia Sorento/Hyundai Santa Fe

If you're barely ever heading out of the city (freeway driving) also stay away from diesels, DPF's clog easily around town and can grenade your engine.

    • Sometimes

      • +4

        Santa Fe/Sorento then.
        The Carnival is hugeee

Admittedly looking at the number of cars that are dropping in price on marketplace, carsales and gumtree it looks like the recession is well and truly in gear.

Also not that it really effects you but stay away from anything euro
Had a Q7 for 8 months $8k in repairs, new injectors, head gasket, dpf later.
        Never again.

I drove a Sante Fe recently. Nice car. Rear two seats have limited leg room and I reckon suitable for kids less than 10.

Edit: it was a diesel and had a decent amount of grunt too with five in the car. The push button to open/close the boot is nice and the built in sunshades for the rear passengers is good too.

If you’ve got kids in kid seats make sure you can get whoever you think is going to ride in the back row into the back row. Can be quite a challenge with a bub seat in when you want to flip the middle row forward for entry to the back row.

7seat SUVs are OK for kids. Some OK for adults for 10-15min. More than that they are too cramped for big kids. You might be better off with a carnival.

Also important to consider the available luggage space when third row is in use. We sold our first seven seat SUV because it could barely hold a grocery bag there, let alone a decent shopping trip for a large family.

Other than that, put you search criteria into your favorite car selling website and go drive and sit in a few that fit your budget. Pick your favourite because we can’t read your mind about how much space you want, if you want more compact, if you want to tow etc.

it’s hard to go wrong wth a Japanese or Korean branded one.

  • For a proper 7 seater that also has boot space for a stroller or a trolley full of shopping, Kia Carnival all the way. Most 7 seaters with the third row up have little to no boot space.

  • Toyota Alphard/Vellfire or even an Estima

We bought a 7 seater late last year..
Mazda CX-8. Great car for the price and size.

Whatever you do, avoid the Nissan Pathfinder at all costs! I hear they have CVT issues past 120k

    • Actually I did exactly opposite to this and I am loving my new Nissan Pathfinder. Transmission is a breeze.
