Fleet GPS

Does anyone know if there is a way I can track my own car. There might be a GPS device from China which can be configured with iphone or a website to monitor.

Any help would be appreciated !!

Thanks

  • depends how much money you want to spend. tight-ass? track yourself? or professional?

Is this for a fleet or just you?

Do you just want to get the data at the end of the day? (not for tracking stolen cars) or do you want a live feed?

  • Just wanted to simply Track my car from my iphone.

    • This didn't answer any of the questions. The simplest solution is to buy a cheap phone and leave it in the car with GPS on.

  • I wanted to embedd a solution to my dad's truck company. Right now am looking for adevice which I can attach to vehicle and then monitor from phone or website.

  • I am looking to spend around $100-300 . Dont want 3G device as it doesn't work where this solution will be implemented , so GPS is the only way out.

    • as said below, GPS doesn't work by itself. GPS tells the device it's location, however it needs to send the message out. For that, you need one of many systems,

      1. 3G
      2. GSM data (or sms)
      3. satellite based messages.

If you don't want to rely on phone networks to send a message out, you need to buy something like spot, there is an ongoing fee too (i think it's $125/year).

  • 1: You may want to seek legal advice on this.

2: 3G and GPS are NOT alternatives. GPS is how the device knows where it is. 3G is how the device broadcasts where it is* (tells you).

If you want it to automatically send the data you will need either 3G or wifi for you to collect it. Also note that even if after you have notified all relavent parties this is legal, there will be a large burden that the transmission and storage of this data is secure.

Personally I think the legal risks far outweigh any advantage to be gained here.

    • Technically you can do some locating be 3G, but this isn't the point.
    • Bruce has a good point. most states have a law similar to this. You have to inform people that they are under surveilence. There also might be legal issues associated with surveillance outside work. For example if someone takes a work truck home. Anyway, you might need to speak to a lawyer

      • Thanks people for all your help. I think am going to first get intouch with a company who does as its something which cant be done easily.
And I will speak to a lawyer regarding this, thanks again.

      • This prompts an idea though: How about you inform people but don't do anything?

        This means:
        1: Zero cost.

2: Hopefully the same (or near) benefit.

        3: Very easy

        4: No legal risk

5: As long as the notification was right you can always add the actual function in later if you feel the need (without repeating the notification).

        Just a thought.

        • except when the vehicles do get stolen and you can't trace them.

        • Its something that we need to add as a functionality for our clients so that they can track their cargoes

        • places like TNT do a similar kind of thing where they give you a tracking number, and that corresponds to a barcode on the package. Each time it passes through a point (unloaded, loaded, delivered, recieved etc) it is scanned and automatically sent via sms to the server.

Either way, having individual trackers or this automated system is going to cost your tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars.
