Suggest a Yoghurt

Everytime I find a yoghurt I like, it's taken off the shelves
* Live in Inner West Sydney, willing to pay extra at an IGA / independent grocer
* Preference is thicker, interesting flavours - healthy eating is not the priority
* Sugar ~15g/100g is fine, Ice cream is not fine :(

History:
Yoghurts that died :(
* Liberte - vanilla, raspberry and coffee, blueberry
* Danone - old ultimate line - strawberry cheescake, tiramisu, french apple tart
* Danone - big tubs of berry / vanilla (the small 4 packs seem wasteful and 1 serving is not enough)
* Moo - meh

Jalna - my last hope atm, it's a bit thicker than the rest and widely available

All the remaining brands seem to do the same texture and flavour and ratio of yoghurt to fruit/syrup,
Tamar Valley (havent tried since they slapped the cream labels on tubs)
Gippsland, Farmer's Union Plus, Dairy Farmers
EVIA - a bit bland but different flavours
Yoplait - ughh
Non dairy / coconut / organic types = too watery

Sorry if I curse your yoghurt….

      • Are they available outside of WA? Never seen them in supermarkets here in Adelaide.

        • +1

          Yes at Foodland and Drakes.

    • Maybe not enough people buy it anymore :(

  • +1

Farmers Union Greek-style yoghurt is the best widely available yoghurt in my opinion after trying all the ones on the local shelf.

Don’t buy flavoured yoghurt. Just flavour it yourself.

  • Have you got Paris creek yoghurt there?

    • supposed to be stocked at nearby IGA but wasnt when I visited on the weekend. May have to go on adventure :)

Make your own. You can control the density, texture, taste and sweetness. Super simple to make with Easi-yo kits. Use a tiny amount of their powder, and the rest cheap milk powder. I use 10g Easi-yo powder and 180g milk powder, with some real vanilla essence and maple syrup added to taste. Delicious and cheap.

    • 10g Easi-yo powder and 180g milk powder

You can also use a bit of the yoghurt from the previous batch (just don't wash out the container) instead of the Easiyo powder.

  • Farmers Union - Greek style yoghurt.

Get it in 1kg tubs at colesworth or 3kg tubs at Costco.

Sick to either the plain or vanilla and add your own toppings/flavourings as you see fit.

    It's excellent.

    • Farmers Union is getting a lot of love, so I have to try.
Since they don't have a small tub of vanilla, I bought one of those satchel ones, hopefully the taste is equivalent. Have never had satchel yoghurt, but imagine the texture will be different to tub.

      • Nah, don't buy the satchels. They are all cut with cream to make them more liquidy and easier to drink. Have a different taste/texture.

  • Yogo for the win! :)

    • Interesting…do these go on sale often?

      • I second this suggestion. Bit more pricey than others but the flavours are good and the yogurt quality is excellent

    • OP lives in Inner West which I believe is beyond the Harris Farm line.

  • I can only eat this , good old set yoghurt, I think it is around $5 for 2kg at local Indian shop: https://www.villagedairy.com.au/natural

  • Gippsland flavored yogurt. PERIOD.

  • Green valley

  • Try something different.

Quark is a German dairy product that is made in a somewhat similar way to yoghurt. However, it is naturally much thicker and doesn’t need any of the trickery today’s producers use to make their yoghurt less runny (gelatine, dairy powders, etc).

In Germany, quark comes in all degrees of fat content and fruit preparation. In Australia we’re much more limited.

Aldi has a decent quark - but only a few of their stores stock it, given that most suburbs don’t shop for it much.

Schulz, an organic Victorian dairy, make excellent quark. It’s not cheap at around $6 or so for 350g but it is dense, creamy (around 12% fat) and has a terrific mouthfeel. It’s different to yoghurt in that it is much denser (towards cream cheese density). Dress it up with fruit and honey and it’ll be as good as it gets.
Other dairies, such as the excellent Mungalli Creek in the Atherton Tablelands in FNQ, also make quark. They do sell as far as Victoria (so I guess Sydney will be on their list as well) - but you need to find the rare shop that stocks their products. Mungalli Creek’s ‘Greek yoghurt’ is actually quark, and it comes in several fruit varieties and is simply outstanding. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy you may need to do your own dairy product development.

  • Farmers Union Plus Yogurt.

  • Jalna ORGANIC Greek beats the rest. Shame the woollies nearby doesn't stock it anymore, only the Coles does. Normally I find organic food don't have a different taste - but this one does.

    • OP wants a high sugar and unhealthy yoghurt .. sort of like the junk food breakfast cereals with high sugar.

Matt understands what I'm looking for :)

I dont think I have much processed sugar to my other meals, rarely have coffee/tea with sugar (maybe once a week)
Don't eat any sweets (confectionery) / rarely desserts
Wouldn't say I actually like the taste of plain yoghurt, but want to have something fermented / for gut health

so this is my compromise. Maybe I could add my own honey to sweeten, to make it a 'healthier' sugar

        • Ok .. sounds balanced .. I'll drop it now :)

  • five:am Organic Coffee Bean yoghurt is the greatest thing to come out of Victoria.

    gogurt.

    because it rhymes with yoghurt.

  • Sugar ~15g/100g is fine

    🙀

If you want to try interesting flavours with no shame on sugar intake, try this.

Village set yoghurt with tbsp or 2 of palm treacle or maple syrup.

    • So add your own sugar and get the same 15% sugar content?

  • If you are considering junk food yoghurt with high sugar, then just go to the chocolate and candy isle at Woolies or Coles.

A block of chocolate would be similarly healthy.

  • I like Chobani plain Greek yogurt. I then add some fresh or frozen berries to it.

  • The favourite in our household is Vanilla Yopro

  • Gippsland.

  • choc yogo or yogo mix

  • Siggi’s man. The short wide tubs. Bloody good stuff.

  • This is an interesting thread because as of late I've been finding it difficult to buy Strawberry Yoplait. The thing is always sold out. And here you are talking about yogurt. Is this some kind of new shortage we have at the moment?

  • Haven't seen it listed yet, but if you can get it https://www.queenslandyoghurt.com.au/ - sometimes at Wollies and more often at IGA (in QLD that is)

Coffee is awesome (if you can find it)

Failing that Gippslands out of the normal Coles/Woolies options, though can be pretty sweet.

  • Back home, they used to add gelatine to yogurt. Everything we find is a set yogurt rather than the watery version found here. Is there any set yogurts available?

  • Try Kefir, tumeric flavour (about $4 from woolworths when on special). Its in fridge near other probiotic stuff

  • The Aldi Premiere blueberry is my fave. Went up a few bucks recently though

  • What about Frozen Yoghurt? Or is that considered ice cream?

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/246847/twi…
    This is 16.4g/100ml

    • apparently this amount of sugar warrants 5 stars ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • Good spot! The food health star rating is a rating for items in the same category, so I think compared to some ice creams, it may be better :\

  • Mundella Greek Mango (or Honey)
    Five:am Coffee Bean

  • I like Procal Greek Yogurt
The thickness is great, it's just plain though…but it tastes great with honey and fruits

Flavoured yogurts like Gippsland do taste great….however the sweetness is to the max, that it feels more like a dessert, I might as well eat some gelato or ice cream

  • I don't usually eat yogurt but actually liked the Liberte lemon yogurt :(

  • Dairy Farmers Thick N Creamy
