Any decent Android deals from mainstream brands like Samsung or HTC around $250 to $300 mark? There're a bunch of sub-$200 ones but the specs are quite poor, looking for at least 800x480 screen resolution if possible.

I strongly recommend GSMArena (http://www.gsmarena.com/). Use their phone finder (http://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3) to define what you really care about, then have a look at the results.
So as an example, I looked for Samsung, model is currently available, phones only (no tablets), price range US$250-$300 (no AUD option), screen resolution at least 800x480. The results are at http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sName=&idMaker=9&idAvai….
