Need More Space on Xbox Series X

Hey OZB team,

I am sure I am not the only one that is having this issue, but the internal storage on my Xbox Series X is full due to the size of the optimised games.

Can I just purchase a 4TB external hard drive (WD MyPassport 4TB) and save Optimised games there? I have read 2 different bits of information, one site said that you actually can't play Optimised games unless it is saved on the internal storage or the Seagate Xbox Expansion card, and the other site said that you can save games there but it won't run as quick as it would if it is was saved on the internal storage etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Benny

Yes you can save any game to an external HD, but many of the newer games must be on the internal storage to run. It usually warns you when you install the game. I don't think there's any XB1 gen game that mandates internal install, it's all the new XBSX ones.

Load times are noticeably different, so I recommend any regularly-played game goes on internal. I have 6 TB external drive for the non-primary installs (I install every game I own in case someone in my family wants to play it).

      ^^ This.

I have a 6TB USB hard drives connected to my Xbox where I store everything I don't play very often.
I also have a 1TB expansion card where I balance my most played games (even non S|X games) just to benefit from the performance bump.

I think the best strategy is to get the 1TB or larger expansion card and a USB HDD.
Spread the load of games between the internet and expansion and dump everything else on the USB drive.

  • All games will run off the internal/external expansion card.

You can store all games on an external USB drive but only Xbox one games will launch, xbox series S|X games will not.

You can use an external USB drive to manage storage restrictions, store S|X games there when not using them to save you downloading/installing them later.

I think I know where you are getting confused.
Storing/playing Xbox one (non S|X optimised games) on the internal SSD/Expansion card will show a performance bump.
As the games were designed to run from a traditional HDD, they will have much quicker loading times due to the high-speed SSD read/write speeds.

  • If the games says optumised or series S/X then that version has to run from the internal hdd. Some versions and games are none series s/x and they cm run from an external hdd.

I simply transfer games between my internal and external hdd. Only takes a few minutes and i can save on buying the overpriced seahate hdd.

  • Thanks heaps for the advice and for clarifying the difference between the 2. I think I will go ahead and buy a 4TB hard drive and just transfer the optimised games across to the internal hard drive when I go to play it.
