How to Mount HDD/SSD in The HP Z640 Front Bays

I have a Z640 and want to increase my drive capacity, I boot from a NVMe PCIe card and have two HDD's in the HDD bays inside.

I would also like to use the 2 empty bays at the front of the Z640 for HDDs or SSDs on top of the slim DVD player.

How can I do this?

I obviously need adapters to hold the drive. But what ones?

I have looked at the many on Ebay but not sure which ones fit the bay size.

I want 1 tray for a 3.5 HDD and 1 tray for 2 ssd drives.

I have bought this for the 2 SSDs but know they have to also be in an adapter. And I would like this but not sure of size.

Appreciate any guidance please

Im not sure what you asking, but if you want a bay with two ssd or ssd / 3.5 , all you need is following or similar (cheaper not fancy)

    Or

  • The hot-swap bays you listed will work fine, if a bit expensive. They are designed to allow you to easily swap out drives from the front without having to open up the case. No additional adapters are needed. Just plug a sata/power cable into the back of the bay & slide the drive into the front. It looks like both the hot swap bays you listed come with the sata/power cables you will need so long as you have some spare molex or sata power cables on the power supply. Most power supplies have some spares unused.

That HP case looks like it may have some custom tool-free mounting for the 5.25 bays but it should all still work. The sizes & screw positions are standardised. Just lift up the toolless retainer (marked with green tabs usually) & remove whatever cover/spacer is currently in the bay, slide in the hot-swap adapter & plug cables into the back of it.

  • Thank you guys it is a great help.
Only thing now is, I only have 2 sata ports on the mobo so not sure if I can piggy back the data cable to enable say 2 drives per port or if I am restricted to just using 2 ports for 2 drives.

  • I wish ! This is one well oiled box with so many projects rom audio, video, graphics, webdesign, blah blah and on it goes. LIke to do the work on the ssds to get as much speed as possible. Forever running out of space until we cull what is not needed. I'm liking the NVMe ssd's and have one in this box as for Win 10 os. really fast.
That looks like the gizmo we need. Thanks again.
